EVERY pony-mad child dreams of being a champion and a dozen young riders, all under the age of 12, got the invaluable chance to learn from one of Ireland’s most talented international show jumpers this week.

Mikey Pender, himself a graduate of the prestigious Glencarraig League, generously gave his time and knowledge to the 12 enthusiastic young winners of the Under 11 and Under 9 Glencarraig League bursary, sponsored by The Irish Field.

International show jumper and top sport horse breeder, Marion Hughes, generously provided her top facilities at her Kilkenny home and base to host Tuesday’s event where the two groups of six young riders got the opportunity to learn from Mikey’s expertise.

Fresh from competing in the Global Champions Tour in Miami Beach at the weekend, Mikey put all the young riders at ease and took each group of six through a step-by-step session, starting with groundwork and poles which set each child and pony nicely up for the jumping phase. To finish it off, Mikey guided the young riders through a tight turn back to an oxer, instructing them how to ride it correctly.

All of the participating children were delighted while the parents were over the moon.

Many thanks to Mikey and Marion for all their time and effort on Tuesday – who knows if a future champion will emerge from the two groups – watch this space!
