THE list of officials at Area 17’s home championships at Hazeldene on Monday made for interesting reading.

The tireless Vanne Campbell acted as cross-country starter – as she does at Eventing Ireland competitions – just a day after attending the Irish Pony Club/Connolly’s Red Mills eventing championships at Tattersalls Ireland.

Georgia Stubington, a director on the board of Eventing Ireland, kept everyone informed with her excellent cross-country commentary all afternoon. The previous weekend she was part of the control team at the EI fixture at Tattersalls Ireland.

Among others on duty on Monday were racehorse trainer Russell MacNabb, a member of the East Down committee who, together with Dan Gilchrist, did a great job of parking the cars, jeeps, trailers, lorries which transported the 252 competitors and their mounts.

Event riders Jim and Emma Newsam, whose son Jamie was a member of the fourth-placed East Down Pocket Rockets team in the 45cms assisted class, acted as Fledging cross-country judges and stewards.

Also filling that role was Jonny Steele who appearance at Hazeldene came after his win on the home-bred R Showman in the CCI2*-L at Millstreet.

Steele’s wife Clare didn’t travel to Co Cork for the international event as she stayed at home with sons William and Jack in preparation for the Home Championships in which William rode Tootsie on the fifth-placed East Down Panthers team in the 45cms class.
