LEOPARDSTOWN’S recent two-day meeting coincided with the launch of a raceday initiative dedicated to improving accessibility, inclusion and enjoyment for people with additional needs. The pilot scheme was supported by a local benefactor, who wanted to enable all family members to enjoy the sport. Leopardstown welcomed 12 families representing local schools and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.
Facilities included a dedicated blackout sensory space, a special needs assistant to host the room and musical therapy sessions with Irish country music performer Aisling Rafferty. A private suite was adapted into a dedicated accessible changing facility, equipped with a mobile hoist and an adult-sized changing bed suitable for people with disabilities.
Children had the opportunity to discover the world of racing with a visit from jockeys such as Chris Hayes and Gavin Ryan, and a tactile education table with racing silks, reins, hoofs, shoes, fencing and equine care materials. Extra provisions were also taken with families provided with preparation packs for children about what happens on a raceday and dedicated car parking for ease of access to the racecourse.
The ‘Racing For All’ initiative will be repeated at Leopardstown on October 16th-17th next year.
