£275,000 Tattersalls Middle Park Stakes (Group 1)

3.00pm, Saturday September 27th

Charlie Appleby admits he has "plenty of confidence" going into the Tattersalls Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday with Wise Approach.

The Mehmas colt will bid to give the Godolphin handler a third win in the Group 1, which 11 horses remain in contention for after the Andrew Balding-trained Five Ways, winner of the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton Park, was supplemented for the race.

After running out the winner of the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury on his penultimate start, Wise Approach put up a solid effort in defeat when finishing third on his Group 1 debut in last month’s Prix Morny at Deauville.

And on the back of that display Appleby, who won £275,000 contest 12 months ago with Shadow Of Light and in 2014 with Charming Thought, believes his two-time race winner will prove tough to beat, provided conditions are right.

Appleby said: “If the weather forecast can be right, and it is a sound surface here, we will definitely be taking a strong view of the Middle Park.

“If there is ease in the ground that would be a question mark, but he has come out of his last race well and is in good order.

“The form of that race in Deauville has worked out solidly. I know the runner-up from that race, Gstaad, just got beat the other day in Ireland, but he put up a good run in defeat that day and we come here with plenty of confidence.”

Busy season

Unlike Appleby’s two previous winners of the race, who both only had three runs before tackling the six-furlong prize, Wise Approach has been much busier with five appearances already under his belt.

However, Appleby believes that has enabled him to learn much more about the horse.

He added: “For one of ours he has been busy enough. He came out early doors and we looked at him being a Royal Ascot horse, and he obviously turned out to be just that.

“He broke his maiden well at Ascot. We went to York, and he got beat, but the track there can be a challenge for a two-year-old so we put a line through it.

“We took him to the Royal meeting and he put up a good performance on the far side group behind Charles Darwin in the Norfolk Stakes.

“We learnt a bit from him there in how to ride him and what sort of horse we were potentially dealing with.

“We went from there on to Newbury where he won very impressively and the form of that worked out well.

“A lot of people asked why didn’t we go to the Gimcrack, but at the end of the day we were looking for that sound surface, and the Morny was on quick ground, and it is a six-furlong Group 1 race so we had to take a strong view of it.

“We went there, and he put up a good solid performance again. I think we learnt a little bit more about the horse.”

£275,000 Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes ?(Group 1)

2.25pm Saturday September 27th

Richard Hughes is "buzzing" about America Queen, who he expects to run a ‘huge race’ in the the Cheveley Park Stakes, which is the other Group 1 contest on the card.

After bolting up by 12 lengths on her debut at Haydock Park the daughter of Havana Grey then found only the re-opposing Royal Fixation too strong in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York.

But with only a length separating the pair on that occasion Hughes is confident his talented two-year-old can bridge the gap in the six-furlong test, which he won twice as a jockey aboard Indian Ink in 2006 and Tiggy Wiggy in 2014.

Hughes said: “We are really pleased with her and we couldn’t be happier. She was quite green at York as she didn’t really learn too much the first day up at Haydock Park.

“She did one nice gallop before she won at Haydock Park with a horse that had already run and she did that nicely. I know she didn’t beat much, but not many win the way she did the first time out over six furlongs.

"She ran a bit green in the Lowther and Ryan (Moore) had to commit a tiny bit earlier than he ideally wanted to.

“She has to find a length with Royal Fixation, but she has improved again and I expect them to be much closer together.

“Now she is rated 107 after two runs and I’d like to think she will improve again. I’m very confident of a big run and I’m buzzing about it."

Handling the Rowley Mile

And although the Jaber Abdullah-owned filly has been kept to flat tracks so far Hughes is confident she will have no problems handling the undulations on the Rowley Mile.

He added: “Newmarket is a difficult track to run on as you meet a few ridges going down the hill near the bushes, but she is pretty straightforward.

“She did a gallop on the straight mile down in Lambourn and that is pretty undulating.

"Billy (Loughnane) rode her and he said she took that fine so we are confident she will handle the track

“There is a huge difference in the two fillies in price, but that doesn’t reflect the distance between them.

?"I think she will run a huge race and she will definitely go close.”

£175,000 bet365 Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap

3.40pm, Saturday September 27th

Classic aspirations might now be over for Treble Tee, however his connections hope he can continue his recent resurgence in form by landing the bet365 Cambridgeshire.

The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained gelding, who features among 38 entries for the Heritage Handicap, had been touted as a possible Betfred 2000 Guineas candidate after making a winning debut on the Rowley Mile in October.

But those plans were soon shelved after a difficult start to his three-year-old campaign, which subsequently saw him gelded after failing to beat a rival in a conditions race at Goodwood in May.

However, after finishing second at Thirsk and Goodwood following a short break, before securing a ready win at Doncaster last time out, hopes are high that the son of Persian King can now start to fulfill his potential.

Ed Crisford said: “When he won first time out on the Rowley Mile last year we thought he was going to be a good horse as he looked good that day. The early part of this year was just a disaster as he was doing things the wrong way around.

“He went to Goodwood on his second start this year, and it was a speed race early on, and it just got to his head. We had to pull stumps and we gelded him, but that has done him the world of good. He has come out of the Doncaster race really well and he is just coming good.

"Next year he will be a good horse, but first we will have this tilt at the Cambridgeshire. To win a Cambridgeshire you often have to be a group horse, and if he goes and does that, then you are in business for group races. He is finally doing what we thought he could do. He is an improving horse, and he is lightly raced still, so he has got it all ahead of him.”
