There are two standouts in the opening contest, hailing from the yards of Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott. Nick Rockett, a debut point-to-point winner who finished fourth to Cheltenham-bound Doctor Bravo in his rules bow at Fairyhouse, impressed last time in a Thurles bumper for the champion trainer. The runner-up on that occasion, Littlefoot, gives some substance to the form as a solid yardstick with other placed bumper efforts.

However, the point-to-point form of He’s Ultimate, a £105,000 purchase for Gordon Elliott, looks strong too. The five-year-old by Champs Elysees split leading Champion Bumper hope It’s For Me and Cheltenham Grade 2 novice hurdle winner Rock My Way at Loughanmore last April. He’s Ultimate might be the better long-term prospect but Nick Rockett has recent race-fitness on his side and gets a tentative nod.

This could be a golden opportunity for Irish Point to double his tally over hurdles. A classy sort who won a Grade 1 bumper in France before joining Gordon Elliott and finishing second in the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle to Marine Nationale and Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle to Champ Kiely, he sets a high standard and receives 9lb from his main rival No Looking Back. That Oliver McKiernan-trained rival is no slouch and belongs in this company but he faces a difficult task at the weights.

A handicap hurdle run at Fairyhouse 15 days ago may well hold the key to this 21-runner affair. Wee Charlie posted a cracking effort in defeat on that occasion when just denied by Happy Dreams, and the handicapper has nudged him up 3lb for that performance.

Falvio, who was an eyecatcher when staying on strongly into second at Naas on his penultimate start, was easier to back last time and proved a bit disappointing, beaten 15 and a quarter lengths. Expect him to show better here, but the handicapper has left his mark unchanged and reversing such a deficit with Wee Charlie might not be straightforward.

This will be the biggest test that Hands Of Gold has faced in his career but the Arthur Moore-trained novice has been progressing nicely with each start and could be up to defying a mark of 128 on his handicap debut. He appears to be versatile enough in terms of ground and arrives here in better form than most of his rivals.

Cash Back must give weight to all rivals but wasn’t disgraced when a well-held second to classy stablemate Echoes In Rain on his last start here in the Grade 3 Limestone Lad Hurdle.

His class edge over these rivals should see him earn a decent chunk of the prize money.

Limerick Lace is quickly improving through the ranks and looks open to more improvement than most of her rivals here. Her superior quality shone through when defying top-weight to win the Grade B Barberstown Castle Novice Handicap Chase on her last start over this course and distance. She needs to progress again, given her new rating of 142 in the context of this race, but there is clearly scope for her to do that.

Journey With Me ran a cracker when second to leading Mares’ Chase fancy Impervious at Punchestown last time. He should be bang there again but his form did tail off slightly in the spring last season.

Low weights tend to be favoured in this €100,000 contest. When factoring in rider claims, Cap York carried just 10st on his way to winning this in 2020, Scoir Mear shouldered only 10st 5lb in 2021 and last year’s winner Diol Ker had just 10st 5lb on his back. Captain CJ is at the right end of the handicap for Dermot McLoughlin. Rated 144 on his last start over fences in December 2020, he has fallen down to a mark of 127 over the course of his 783-day absence. He didn’t run badly over an insufficient trip on his return from that massive layoff over hurdles at Gowran and that run will have blown the cobwebs away nicely. The Tack Room is 4lb out of the handicap off bottom-weight but commands respect as a chaser on the up for John Kiely and J.P. McManus.
