COMMANDANT Geoff Curran claimed his second international victory of the week for the Army Equitation School in Monday morning’s 1.35m Jim Derwin-sponsored jump-off class on the final day of the 2023 Mullingar International Horse Show.

Riding the Minister for Defence’s eight-year-old mare DHF Alliance (Ard VDL Douglas x Lux Z), bred by Paul Douglas, Curran posted a jump-off time of 35.21 to head proceedings in the €5,000 class.

Just 11 of the 74 starters produced a clear in the first round to battle it out against the clock. Four combinations collected a single time fault, while 16 had one fence down and 11 had two on the ground.

Angela Waras and Hugh Ward’s home-bred stallion Diamant de la Mer (Diamant de la Semilly x Eurocommerce Berlin) came closest to catching Curran when they stopped the clock 35.42 for second place.

Niamh McEvoy guided Greg Broderick’s 13-year-old gelding Hybernia (Flex a Bill x Clover Hill), bred by Dr Noel Cawley, took third place in 35.46.

Fourth went the way of Claremorris rider Shane Goggins aboard Jack Goaley’s Boleybawn Camen (Cassidee x Ard VDL Douglas), bred by Ronan Rothwell; they were clear in a time of 38.18.

Back in Ireland for Mullingar after helping Ireland to win the five-star Nations Cup in Rome the weekend previous, Mikey Pender and his home-bred Montender gelding Nando Quality were fifth (0/0 39.92), while Shane O’Reilly riding Nonstop Caprice (Nonstop x Artist), owned and bred by Brian F McConville, took sixth (0/0 40.28).
