1.05 JR Fitzpatrick Agricultural Maiden 7f

Given she finished third to Tahiyra in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last term, Eternal Silence already sticks out here, notwithstanding the glowing reports from her trainer on how she has progressed through the winter. It will be disappointing if the daughter of War Front can’t convert this opportunity, given her rating of 102, and with connections targeting her at the Irish 1000 Guineas at the end of the month.

Of course there are plenty of horses with her profile who struggle to get off the mark when lowered back to maiden company and there is also a chance that there could be a very good filly lurking here. Subzero is a candidate for that. A daughter of Galileo and Albany winner Different League, she ran well enough when fourth on her sole start last season and may well have improved from two to three.

SELECTION: ETERNAL SILENCE

1.40 Captain Dara Fitzpatrick Memorial Maiden 1m4f

Milwaukee could well improve to take this maiden. A son of Justify, he raced just once last season, finishing fourth to Hippodrome at the Curragh in October. He raced a bit awkwardly there, giving the impression the experience will have done him good and given plenty of time, he could be a different proposition now.

Deakin might be worth considering, despite a disappointing seasonal return when a well held sixth to Bright Legend. He probably failed to handle a combination of a red hot pace and heavy ground there, and should be better equipped now. Azazat was a beaten favourite when third here early last month but is another who should come on for that effort and get involved again.

SELECTION: MILWAUKEE

Next best: Deakin

2.15 Cornelscourt Stakes (Group 3) 1m

American Sonja looks dangerous off the back of a smart performance to win a Gowran Park handicap but she may have to jump forward again to beat stablemate Thornbrook. The daughter of Saxon Warrior achieved plenty last season, winning on debut at this track before finishing a close third to Meditate in the Group 2 Debutante. She was well held in the Moyglare, but she looks better than that, and if she has improved from two to three, she could develop into a real class filly this term.

American Sonja does have a fitness advantage so should go well. So does Zarinsk, who ran reasonably well in the Priory Belle 1000 Guineas Trial here last month. She steps up to a mile for the first time. Aspen Grove is another to note. She was a 66/1 winner of a Group 3 on just her third start last August, and didn’t disgrace herself when seventh in the Marcel Boussac.

SELECTION: THORNBROOK

2.50 Amethyst Stakes (Group 3) 1m

On ratings, New Energy is the one to beat here, but he might just need this run first time up, and there is a suspicion he needs the strong pace of a top quality contest to see him at his best. Goldana has 9lbs to find, but she has the scope to make up that gap after a seasonal/stable debut win at the Curragh. Racing over seven furlongs, it took her a while to get going when she was chasing the race-fit Mea Domina, but once she got on top in the final furlong, she was well in control, leaving a distinct impression there would be more to come over a longer trip.

Real Appeal should be on the premises as well. He runs for Ado McGuinness these days but remains a rock solid operator and some of his best form has come around this course. He was fourth to Order Of Australia in a valuable contest in Doha when last seen.

SELECTION: GOLDANA

3.25 Derby Trial Stakes (Group 3) 1m2f

Proud And Regal has to give away a race fitness advantage but he has the class to overcome that. Donnacha O’Brien’s colt had a fine juvenile campaign, winning three of his five races, but also progressing as his season went on, having finished third in the Futurity, second to Al Riffa in the National Stakes and then securing a Group 1 victory in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud. He is a course winner and his trainer is going really well through the early stages of the season.

Up And Under may have been a little unlucky in the Ballysax, when he was impeded late on and was then just held by White Birch at the line. It was only his second ever start, so there should be a lot more to come. It’s worth noting Tower Of London was just 2/1 against Auguste Rodin here in the Champions Juvenile Stakes, and while he disappointed, he has a Derby-type pedigree and must be highly thought of at Ballydoyle. Of the remainder, Sprewell gives the impression that this trip will suit but will need to step up on the form of his Naas win, while the same can be said for Mr Lincoln, who did well to get up late on to win his maiden at Cork.

4.00 Clayton Hotel Leopardstown Fillies Maiden 1m2f

It is eye-catching that Dermot Weld is yet to trainer a winner on turf this term, but his runners have regularly hit the frame recently, and if he hasn’t got off the mark before this maiden, Shamida could be the one to get him going. The daughter of Australia finished third on her sole start last season, a really good effort in behind Sounds Of Heaven. In a race where the front three raced up with the pace, she was the only one who got into it from the back of the pack.

Warm Heart should improve from her seasonal debut second to Curvature, who probably got a bit of run on her over the mile here last month. The Galileo filly kept on well and may well appreciate this step up in trip.

This is widely competitive but another Dermot Weld inmate makes plenty of appeal, the Colin Keane-ridden Giladah. She was highly progressive last season, winning three of her five starts and stepped forward again when beaten less than a length into third by Mashhoor at Cork. She came from off the pace that day, and only just failed to catch the leaders, but she hit the line hardest and ought to come for the run now.

Wild Dollar is another fast finisher to watch out for. He ran a huge race when coming from way back here in the 10-furlong handicap won by Cristal Clere last month, a race that has worked out well. Laughifuwant remains potentially well treated and is an interesting contender coming up to this trip.

SELECTION: GILADAH

5.10 Fund A New Home For Festina Lente Handicap 1m4f

Amusement gets a tentative vote in a trappy finale. Donnacha O’Brien’s filly failed to win in five starts last term but ran reasonably well on each start, and wasn’t far away in a nursery on her final run off a mark of 79. That contest has worked out reasonably well and she is taken in the hope that she will improved form two to three. Needless to say, she is bred to be much better than her current assessment, by Galileo out of a half-sister to Oaks winner Dancing Rain.

Dubawi Spectre should go close. He is another maiden but has shown himself to be progressing this term and was close enough to a first win on each of his previous two starts. He is rated similarly again and first-time blinkers may aid him.
