After his incredible triumph in the early hours of the morning in Flemington, Joseph O’Brien admitted that never in his wildest dreams did he imagine he would see his horse win the 2017 Melbourne Cup.

On a truly memorable day for Irish racing, Rekindling saw off Johannes Vermeer, trained by O’Brien’s father Aidan, with the Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite finishing third to complete a clean sweep.

Aged just 24, O’Brien becomes the youngest ever trainer to win the Melbourne Cup, in a training career that began 18 months ago.
