IN a week which was chockfull of stories in the world of racing, perhaps the most surprising news was the shock announcement by Jamie Spencer of his intention to retire from the saddle at the end of the season at the age of just 34. One suspects that the full story has yet to emerge but the decision demands a reaction.

Spencer is a jockey who has divided opinion like no other. His achievements in the saddle rank higher than most and many racing professionals are quick to extol his virtues, while on the other hand he is arguably the most unpopular of all the top jockeys amongst the betting public. The reason for this is simple, as his favoured style of waiting tactics often results in him being perceived as leaving it too late, with accusations of overconfidence and cockiness never being too far away.
