THE €10m Global Champions League (GCL) Super Cup at the GC Prague Playoffs in the Czech Republic promises to be a spectacle to behold.
This high-stakes, three-day competition will be a battleground for some of the best horses and riders in the world, with a huge prize pot up for grabs.
The 12 lowest-ranked teams from the regular season will compete against each other in the quarter final; three riders from each team take on the single-round format.
Four of those teams will not get through to the semi-final, so they may only have the chance to jump one round.
The semi-final will see the eight qualified teams joining the top-four teams from the regular season for another one-round competition, with three riders per team. Every result counts when a prize pool of more than €6.5m awaits.
The competition culminates with the best six teams battling it out over two rounds for the coveted title.
The top teams have employed strategic decisions throughout the season on how many horses and riders to use at each round of the competition, but analysis shows that all it takes is three exceptional horses.
Last year, Miami Celtics persisted with the same riders throughout their victorious journey. The Celtics started from the Quarter Final and fought their way to glory using the same riders throughout every stage of the weekend and with the same horses: Bertram Allen on Pacino Amiro, Michael G Duffy on Clitschko and Edouard Schmitz on Gamin van’t Naastveldhof.
Of the 12 teams that have graced the podium in GCL Super Cup history, four have achieved this feat with just three horses, and two have ascended the top spot on the podium to claim the illustrious trophy.
Thursday heralds the commencement of the GCL Super Cup where the spotlight will fall on the equine partners, who are poised to be the true game-changers throughout the thrilling four-day spectacle.
