CARLOW show jumper Jason Foley is settling into his new job at Sean Cubitt’s Bruntswood Stables in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands. Foley joined Cubitt’s operation after a number of year riding for Ger O’Neill at Castlefield Stables where he made his name both nationally and internationally.

Last week, Oliva in Spain proved a happy hunting ground when he delivered a host of top results, including victory in Sunday’s three-star 1.45m aboard the eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse Rockwell RC.

Foley is well acquainted with the horse as the pair won the gold medal at the World Breeding Championships in 2019 when the Ronan Byrne-bred gelding was five.

Then produced by a number of riders under Cubitt’s ownership, Foley linked up again with the gelding last week and won the class when best of 13 clear rounds in 66.63 seconds to earn €6,375.

On Thursday in the 1.30m, Foley was best of the Irish when he took third place with Lady Angeles. One of 31 clears, he stopped the clock in a time of 57.01.

Byrne placed

On Saturday, Aisling Byrne took two placings in the 1.30m Accumulator. She delivered her best result with her own Celeste Spb Z, delivering a clear in 54.28 for second place. She also came home with nothing to add aboard Bronson De Reve in a time of 57.17 for eventual fourth place.

Niall Talbot and Deep Seam Semilly slotted into second place in Sunday’s Gold 1.30m Tour when they were clear in 54.74. One place behind was Foley and Lady Angeles, who also maintained a clean sheet in a slower time of 55.03.

Irish riders dominated the Bronze tour 1.40m final, filling three of the top placings. Best of those was Aisling Byrne and Chin Cham Cham in second place. The pair were the slowest of the two double clears in 45.63. Byrne was less than a second slower than the winner, Julie Kristoffersen and Daigo de La Dhuys (44.82). Ella Clancy took third place with Corraghoe Steel when they finished on four faults in 41.59.

Grand Prix

In the final three-star 1.50m Grand Prix, Jenny Rankin took seventh place with Ariel Grange’s nine-year-old gelding Imar when they had two down in the 12-way jump-off in a time of 40.80. Victory went to Belgium’s Nicola Philippaerts with H&M Luna van’t Ruytershof Z.
