SCORING Ireland’s second two-star Grand Prix win last weekend was Limerick show jumping rider Shane Carey who won at Drammen, Denmark.

The Denmark-based rider guided the 12-year-old gelding Skorphults Baloutendro to win the €20,000 class which was a competitive affair. From 32 starters, nine produced a first round clear to go through to the jump-off.

Against the clock, Carey was fastest of five who went clear again in a time of 38.30 seconds, claiming the top prize of €6,685. He was fractions of a second quicker than Norway’s Therese Søhol Henriksen with Santos Z in 38.61, and in third place was Denmark’s Kamilla Ladefoged Rasmussen with Chico Z (0/0 40.13).

Carey and Skorphults Baloutendro, who was ridden by his wife Linnea Ericsson-Carey in 2022, were runners-up in Friday’s 1.45m Table A Grand Prix qualifier. The pair were one of 10 clears in 76.21 seconds behind Norwegian winner Geir Gulliksen with VDL Groep Quatro (0/ 75.57).

Carey also slotted into seventh place with the eight-year-old gelding Context, owned by Stall Xena, when clear in 81.53. Ireland’s Ian Fives was ninth aboard the Irish Sport Horse De Nero (Pacino x Takashi van Berkenbroeck), bred by Ellen Kernan. Carey and Context were placed in all three classes over the weekend, also finishing fourth in a 1.40m and seventh in a 1.45m with two clear rounds.
