TICKS make my skin crawl, we have plenty here in Fermanagh and they are common across Ireland in grassy, woodland, or rural areas. After walks, especially in spring and summer, check your dog’s skin for small, round, grey or brown lumps – often around the ears, neck, armpits, or between the toes. Ticks bury their heads in the skin to feed on blood, so you’ll often spot their bodies sticking out.

To safely remove a tick, use a special tick-removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers. Grip the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull steadily – don’t twist or squeeze, as this may leave parts behind or cause infection.

Clean the area with pet-safe antiseptic and wash your hands thoroughly. Monitor your dog for signs of illness, such as lethargy or a loss of appetite. If you’re unsure, always consult your vet for advice or support.
