GILLS Driving School in Ballina, Co Mayo has been training drivers of all kinds of vehicles for 55 years. They come from all over Ireland and even from Holland and Germany, such is the good reputation of the school.
Cars, jeeps and trailers, horseboxes, large trucks and even buses - it’s a one-stop shop says Tiernan Gill, a well-known personality, competitor and volunteer on the sport horse scene. One phone call is all that’s required to get you started - even if you just want a provisional licence - and you might well end up talking to Tiernan himself, as he is very accessible.
The company’s motto is ‘We’re bigger because we’re better’. Tiernan explains: “We have more vehicles and more instructors than anyone else, and our instructors are very highly qualified.”
In the equine area, their clients range from the ordinary car driver or amateur horse owner to those wishing to travel teams of horses across Europe. “Every week, we run the Equine Transport Type 2 course, which allows you to drive equestrian vehicles in Europe. There’s an exam involved and we have a very high pass rate.”
Fancy a career change? Tiernan says he knows lots of employers - equine and mainstream - who are screaming for licensed truck drivers. “Good drivers are hard got,” he says. “You could be fully trained in 8-10 weeks and working as a well-paid driver almost immediately.” We’re tempted!
