HORSE Sport Ireland (HSI) has launched a new industry-wide survey aimed at tackling some of the biggest challenges facing the equine workforce. The initiative builds on The Business of Horsepower report, unveiled in June by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, which laid bare the staffing and skills issues within the sector.
Commissioned by HSI and prepared independently by IFAC Accountants with funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine under National Breeding Services, the report identified clear skills gaps as well as opportunities for targeted training and education.
The latest survey takes those insights a step further. Employers and employees are being asked to share their experiences on recruitment, career development and the day-to-day pressures of working in equine businesses. HSI hopes the data will help shape training and upskilling programmes that meet the sector’s needs.
Ireland’s equine industry is valued at €1 billion annually and underpins 47,000 jobs, particularly in rural areas. Yet the report highlighted growing concerns: rising costs, access to land and difficulties in reaching high-value markets are squeezing margins, while staffing shortages remain a persistent issue for business owners.
HSI says the survey is a chance for the industry to take control of its future by providing the evidence needed to secure better training pathways, support employers, and strengthen the viability of equine enterprises. To complete the survey scan the QR code.
