TEAGASC have made the final call-out for their invaluable blended learning Equine Breeding and Reproduction course (for participants aged 18 or older).

The course is aimed at sport horse (and pony) breeders - those embarking on breeding for the first time or those who simply want to improve or refresh their knowledge.

The course objectives are:

  • To provide information so that informed decisions can be reached to embark on a sport horse/pony breeding enterprise.
  • To educate sport horse/pony breeders in the fundamentals of equine breeding, and reproduction husbandry.
  • How is this course delivered?

    The first three days of the course are delivered online through Zoom, followed by one day of practical learning.

    Any accompanying course manual will also be provided.

    How much does the course cost?

    Course fee is €200.

    November/December 2025 Course

    Session One, The Breeding Programme, is on Tuesday, November 11th from 2pm to 4.30pm and will cover:

    • Legislation
    • Breeding goals
    • Mare and stallion selection criteria
    • Mare reproductive system
  • Session Two, Anatomy and Physiology, is on Tuesday, November 18 from 2pm to 4.30pm and will cover:

  • Physiology of the breeding cycle
    • Reproductive soundness in the mare
    • Pre-mating mare management
  • Session Three, Reproduction, is on Tuesday, November 25 from 2pm to 4.30pm and will cover:

    • Pre-mating mare management
    • Mating management
    • Mare management after mating
    • Subfertility in mares
  • Online sessions will be provided using the ‘Zoom’ platform, therefore a good internet connection is required to engage fully with these.

    Please note: Zoom classroom sessions are NOT being recorded, to encourage full participation by attendees during interactive elements of the course.

    Session Four is Thursday, December 4 from 11am to 4pm

    The on-farm workshop reviews equine reproductive husbandry while learning from a breeder, and an audience with a specialist repro vet.
