SHOVED under our gate one evening and left to fend for themselves, these two little terriers did not understand why the person who abandoned them was driving away. They ran out onto a busy road after the car, but it was soon out of sight. The two frightened dogs returned to seek shelter from the pouring rain in the bushes in front of our Centre. Thankfully, it was not long before they were found by one of our managers living on-site.
Warm beds
Sharon and Kelly, who we suspected were mother and daughter and named after the famous TV Osbournes, were lucky that they were found so quickly - we dread to think what might have happened in other circumstances. They were given warm beds and a tasty meal in a cosy kennel where they were safe.
Once they settled in, we began to see just how friendly these two girls were, and we had no trouble rehoming them together. Their adopter, Chloe, said: “From the moment the ladies arrived home, it was as if they’d always lived here. They immediately picked out their spot on the sofa and hopped up there as if to say, ‘Oh it’s good to be home!’ Sharon and Kelly have been very affectionate with us since day one, always looking for cuddles and they both enjoy a good belly rub!
“They’re a little nervous of some noises and places, but we’re looking forward to showing Sharon and Kelly the fun treats and adventures that await them in the world! We’re so lucky to get to have the ladies join our family, and we love them to bits!”
Specialist support
Sharon and Kelly got their happy ending, but unfortunately, surrender and abandonment rates of dogs are still too high. In 2024 alone, we received 3,317 requests from people looking to surrender dogs into our care. We care for hundreds of dogs like Sharon and Kelly every year, providing vet care, training, and specialist support to help get them ready for their forever homes.
We urge members of the public who are thinking of getting a dog to adopt or consider making a donation to help us be there for more dogs like Sharon and Kelly. For more information, visit our website at dogstrust.ie.
