SUNDAY was an emotional day for the Shaw family as I sent out a 50/1 shot, Telepathy, to win at the Curragh. What made the win so poignant was that it came 59 years to the day since my father trained the winner of the Irish 1000 Guineas. So it was that almost six decades later another Tommy Shaw returned to the winner’s enclosure.

My father was a successful jockey before turning his attention to training. Having started off as head man to Paddy “Darkie” Prendergast, he was then offered the position as private trainer to Mrs Biddle at Palmerstown House.
