JOHN Richardson, affectionately known as JR, is without doubt the most frequently mentioned name in the harness racing column. He has been leading driver in Ireland ‘at least 20 times’ and every season produces progressive youngsters, free-for-all horses and in recent years French Trotters.

Delvin Miller (1913-1996) was known as ‘Harness Racing’s Goodwill Ambassador’ in America. Richardson is similar in that although he is no pushover on the track, the industry in Ireland are united in their respect for John. The 54-year-old is generous with his time and will share his tips with young trainers if a horse is hitting his knee or boring on the bends.
