WITH plenty of emphasis these days on the sourcing of alternative careers for former racehorses or indeed thoroughbreds who never raced, the growing sport of polocrosse in Ireland is proving a good option for some.

The Horetown Polocrosse Club, which held its annual tournament – and the first club-graded tournament since Covid-19 struck over 19 months ago – over the August bank holiday weekend at Cushinstown, Co Wexford, certainly proved that polocrosse can be played on any horse, big or small. However, it has to be said that the top-level horses in polocrosse are all thoroughbreds.
