TODAY’S fixture at Fairyhouse was cancelled on Friday afternoon due to a waterlogged track. Clerk of the course Brian Hamilton said: “We’ve had 30mm of rain since entries and another 15mm forecast for Saturday morning. The ground is saturated and completely flooded in front of the last fence. With the forecast in mind, the best thing to do is to postpone the meeting.”
The fixture has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 3rd. Fairyhouse is already due to race the following day.
Racing at Naas on Sunday is subject to a 7.30am inspection tomorrow. Clerk of the course Brendan Sheridan said: “We’ve had 39mm of rain at Naas Racecourse this week alone, with 9mm since yesterday morning when the ground turned heavy.
“The rain this week has been very heavy in many places and, with the volume of rain falling, it has been difficult for the forecasters to predict exact numbers and unfortunately the outlook into the weekend is pretty similar.
“There is the possibility we will get a further 15mm to 20mm of rain through to Sunday morning and, in light of that forecast and the current heavy ground conditions, we have called an inspection at 7.30am on Sunday. We are fit for racing at present.”
There will also be a 7.30am inspection on Sunday ahead of the Dungarvan point-to-point.
Sunday’s meeting at Fontwell has also been cancelled due to waterlogging but Saturday’s Festival Trials card at Cheltenham is expected to go ahead. The ground is likely to ride soft following 20mm of rain there this week.
Looking ahead, soft ground seems to be on the cards for the Dublin Racing Festival next weekend. Met Eireann says low pressure will continue to dominate next week, bringing further unsettled and mixed conditions in the Leinster area.
