SINNDAR, a dual Derby winner in 2000 and also successful in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe that season, has died, aged 21.
A Group 1 winner at two and crowned European champion three-year-old in 2000, the John Oxx-trained colt remains the only horse to have won the Derby, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at the age of three.
A winner of seven of his eight starts, Sinndar was ridden in all of his races by Johnny Murtagh who said after his win in the Arc ahead of Egyptband, Volvoreta and Montjeu: “No horse can get by him. He's got speed, he's got staying ability and a great heart. He's the best horse. A true champion."
The Aga Khan homebred left his mark at stud with Group 1 winners such as Rosanara, Shareta and Shawanda as well as Youmzain, who was runner-up in the Arc for three consecutive years. Sinndar’s legacy also lives on through his daughters who have already produced two classic winners in Flotilla and Trading Leather.
Retired to stand at the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud in 2001, Sinndar moved to the same owner's Haras de Bonneval after 15 years and he was retired to Haras d’Ouilly at the end of the 2017 breeding season. His last crop of foals was born this year.
