LILLIE Langtry never won the Lillie Langtry. The one-mile-six-furlong trip was obviously too far for her, a Coronation Stakes winner, a Matron Stakes winner.

Not that the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes is named after the horse, more than the horse and the race were both named after the person, and Lillie Langtry’s trainer Aidan O’Brien could hold the key to the latest renewal of the race today.

The champion trainer sent out Divinely to finish fourth in the race last year, and he sent out Snow to finish third (of three) in 2020, and he had the third and fourth with South Sea Pearl and Flowering Peach in 2019, and Emily Dickinson goes into today’s race with a big chance.

Winner of a 10-furlong maiden at Naas in April, the Dubawi filly was sent off at a short price for the Lingfield Oaks Trial in early May, but it never really happened for her there, and she could finish only fifth behind Rogue Millennium.

Given a nice break by her trainer after that, she returned in the Stanerra Stakes at Leopardstown last month and, stepped up to a mile and six furlongs for the first time, she ran a big race to run the talented Rosscarbery to a short head.

First run

Rosscarbery had finished third past the post in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes on her previous run, and she got first run on Emily Dickinson at Leopardstown that evening, quickening into a two-length lead on the run to the furlong marker. There was a lot to like about the manner in which Emily Dickinson stayed on, however, to force a photo finish, with the pair of them finishing nicely clear of Lady Hayes, with Forbearance seven and a half lengths back in fifth.

Emily Dickinson didn’t run badly in the Irish Oaks last time. She was well back in the field early on and, while she couldn’t match Magical Lagoon’s turn of foot, she kept on well to finish within four lengths of the winner. A daughter of Irish Oaks winner Chicquita, she should appreciate the step back up to a mile and six furlongs today.

Sea La Rosa is a talented filly, she was impressive in winning a Group 3 race at Haydock at the end of May, but it was a little disappointing that she didn’t go on and win the Lancashire Oaks back at Haydock last time, after Free Wind and Eshaada got in each other’s way inside the two-furlong marker. Free Wind did remarkably well to win in the circumstances, but Sea La Rosa probably would have finished only third if there hadn’t been any interference.

She is talented and she remains progressive, but she can race keenly through her races, and she may be vulnerable today, stepping up to a mile and six furlongs for the first time.

Stewards’ Cup

The Coral Stewards’ Cup is obviously not easy, a 28-runner charge down Goodwood’s six-furlong straight, but Inver Park has plenty in his favour.

He ran out a good winner of the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last time over seven furlongs, but he has six-furlong pace too, all but one of his previous runs had been over six furlongs, and he had won his previous two, both over today’s trip.

He has now won three of his five races since he has joined George Boughey, his last three, and he continues to progress. A 4lb hike for his Ascot win was fair, and there is every chance that he can continue his progression now. The fast pace that they are sure to go will suit him well, and Ben Curtis is two for two on him.

Mr Wagyu is a player. John Quinn’s horse has raced 64 times, but he is fast and he is tough and he is one for one at Goodwood. He won the Stewards’ Cup consolation race last year.

He showed his willing attitude again last time at the Curragh on Irish Oaks day when he battled on well to win the Scurry, getting home by a head from Big Gossey, but he has to carry a 6lb penalty for that, which leaves him 2lb poorly in, and that may just leave him vulnerable.

Summerghand is also a player. He won this race in 2020, and he gets to race off an 8lb lower mark today, and he represents the David O’Meara/Jason Watson combination that won the Golden Mile yesterday. Tabdeed and Annaf could also run well at decent prices, but Inver Park is the bet.
