Juddmonte newcomer Formal Display is one of only four Ger Lyons-trained entries for the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes and gets a tentative nod in a maiden restricted to debutants. By Too Darn Hot and out of Group 1 winner Passage Of Time, he makes plenty of appeal on paper as a close relation to the classy Time Test.

Given how Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore have been dominant in maidens this season, London City is of obvious interest. Being by Justify, though, there’s every chance he could improve with time and benefit from this initial experience.

Lady Fox was first past the post in a maiden already this season before being disqualified and probably won’t be inconvenienced by the rain arriving ahead of the weekend. She should be bang there if back to form after possibly not being best suited by the demands of five furlongs at Tipperary last time.

Apple A Dey finished in front of the selection on that occasion and that was just her first start since joining Henry de Bromhead. She could have improvement to come. Newcomers Keke, Tennessee Gal and Rattletheonionbag are worth keeping an eye out for.

Youcrackmeup showed a terrific attitude to battle her way to a clearcut Galway Festival success and it’s possible she could keep improving beyond her new mark, despite life becoming a fair deal tougher off 10lb higher. Jessica Harrington’s three-year-old is on a roll and won’t be inconvenienced by the overnight rain. The presence of Effernock Fizz means this will likely turn into a stamina test, and that will suit the selection.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained Sugaree has every chance to progress from an opening mark of 85, having won a Leopardstown maiden in decent style when last seen. It’s possible she’ll benefit from this first start in handicap company, though. Marvelosa and Esquiline are entitled to be on the premises again.

A record-equalling 16th win in this race could be coming the way of Aidan O’Brien, as he supplies the highly-touted Henry Longfellow, who ought to take some beating. By Dubawi and out of world-class mare Minding, he won nicely on his debut at this venue and the form has been boosted since by runner-up Mythology winning a Galway maiden and finishing second in Group 3 company at Deauville.

Ger Lyons’ Spanish Flame is a cracking individual, though, and commands plenty of respect. This will be the toughest test he has ever faced but he will be completely comfortable at this trip and has an experience edge over the once-raced Henry Longfellow. Islandsinthestream hasn’t been seen since creating an excellent impression when winning on his debut over ten weeks ago.

A rematch between the Chesham Stakes one-two, Snellen and Pearls And Rubies, is likely to be front and centre in this Group 2 event. That said, the former’s connections could have one eye on the Moyglare Stud Stakes and use this race as a stepping stone following her eight-week break since Royal Ascot. Pearls And Rubies also must bounce back from being upset in the Anglesey last time.

Despite having yet to win a race, Dollerina might be worth giving a chance to if representing a bit of value in the market. She shaped nicely on her barrier trial introduction at Naas before catching the eye when runner-up in a maiden here on debut behind ante-post classic favourite Ylang Ylang. She could have plenty more to offer and looks an each-way bet to nothing with eight runners in the line-up. Vespertilio ran a blinder when second to Ylang Ylang in the Silver Flash and is another maiden worthy of respect.

It is possible that some of her rivals failed to fire in the Munster Oaks last time but Thunder Roll stepped up encouragingly to finish third on that occasion and could be tough to beat back in maiden company now with an official rating of 98. She can put the experience of her opening three runs to good use and get off the mark if bringing her ‘A’ game.

Starry Eyed is back from a 139-day break so possibly might sharpen up for the run but she has likely shown enough to win a maiden before the season is out. Tommy Thug, tried in cheekpieces for the first time, has been knocking on the door in maidens the last twice too and might give the selection most to think about.

Ross O’Sullivan and Amanda Torrens teamed up for a big-handicap success during the week at Dundalk with Longbourn and there could be another nice prize in store here for the same connections’ Turbulence, who is due a change of luck. The race didn’t unfold kindly for him at Killarney two starts ago and he was again unlucky in running when only narrowly denied at Naas earlier this month. The handicapper has nudged him up 2lb but he is still probably on a decent mark.

Luke Short was third in that same Naas contest and rates a player again if sharpening up from his first start back after a lengthy layoff. Deakin is one of the more unexposed contenders and may not be far away on handicap debut.

A return to this track, with the anticipated overnight rain in her favour, could work the oracle for Shimmerz, provided she doesn’t find the minimum trip too sharp after winning over seven furlongs here in May. She didn’t act at all when tried in a hood for the first time at Naas last month so a line can be drawn through that disappointing run.

Calum Hogan’s 10lb claim will be a help to Shoebox King, who has been running very consistently of late.
