12.12 Happy New Year From All At Cork Maiden Hurdle 2m

Provided he’s not inconvenienced by the drop to two miles (from two miles and three furlongs), Will Wilde ought to be in the shake-up for Liz Doyle after an encouraging third at Naas last time. The market was positive about his claims on that occasion and there was likely no shame in finishing behind the impressive Quai De Bourbon and promising youngster Fenway Park. He looks the type to improve with experience.

Paggane can be expected to progress from her hurdling bow at the Navan Racing Festival when a 19-length fifth to Look To The West, and will likely give the selection plenty to think about for Willie Mullins. It hasn’t happened for D Art D Art since a bright start to his career when winning a Gowran bumper last January, but he isn’t without a chance if back to his best.

SELECTION: WILL WILDE

El Champo has a solid chance of continuing Philip Rothwell’s landmark season, returning to hurdles after a respectable first try over fences at Limerick last week. He jumped pretty soundly on the whole last time but the race turned into a bit of a sprint and that placed an emphasis on quick jumping late on that wouldn’t have helped him. He has won on heavy ground before and travelled like he’s still in fine fettle last time. A bold bid can be expected.

Flamborough won a maiden hurdle around here in November and possibly didn’t appreciate how the race unfolded in a big-field handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse last month. It was a bunched affair and he didn’t have as much daylight as when winning previously. He should show better back in this lower grade and smaller field. Striking finished down the field at Leopardstown over Christmas but his previous third at Punchestown gives him a squeak.

SELECTION: EL CHAMPO

1.22 ITM Irish Stallion Trail 12-13 January Maiden Hurdle 3m

Stepping up to three miles for the first time under rules is an unknown for Largy Hill but he’s expected to be up to the task and can get off the mark over hurdles at the second attempt. Conditions are expected to be testing at the Mallow track and he has already proven himself with a cut in the ground when winning a bumper at the Limerick Christmas Festival last season.

Zaidi has let supporters down on a few occasions and isn’t the easiest to trust, but he’s got experience at the distance and on testing ground so should take home a prize money cheque. It’s interesting to see connections of Glen Kiln experiment by going up to this distance, having seen him drop away close home over two miles and three furlongs last time. His stamina needs to be proved but he could have place claims if seeing this out.

SELECTION: LARGY HILL

Without knowing how sharp he will be for his first start in 156 days, it’s hard to be overly bullish about the claims of Da Capo Glory but he gets the nod given he has the potential to be a cut above these rivals if bringing his best to the table for Co Cork-based trainer Padraig Butler. The 135-rated top-weight beat Ash Tree Meadow in a conditions hurdle at Punchestown during the summer and finished a fine second to Grangeclare West at the same venue last spring. He has a touch of quality that these rivals probably can’t match, but his lack of a recent run - and big weight in testing conditions - means treading a little carefully could be the best option. Market confidence would be encouraging.

Extrapolation is a battle-hardened campaigner who wasn’t disgraced when a 13-and-a-half-length third at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve. He should be in the mix again if sharpening from that first start since September. It was too early to know how Evesham Road would have fared when he unseated at Thurles last time but switching back to handicap company looks a positive and he has winning form on soft ground at Clonmel.

SELECTION: DA CAPO GLORY

Carrigaline Beginners Chase

Given this race is restricted to horses who are rated 102 or less over hurdles, Jet Setting Johnny looks attractive enough here with his chasing mark of 113.

The form of his latest third at Clonmel got a boost when runner-up Ask Anything won at Down Royal on December 26th, while the fourth was just touched off on New Year’s Day at Catterick and the fifth bolted up on the same afternoon at Tramore.

Iron Allen has been improving and showed a willing attitude when winning a restricted maiden hurdle at Naas last time.

He goes straight over fences but is a point-to-point winner with five runs in that sphere as well as one in a hunter chase start at this track (pulled up over three miles last April). Whether he’ll want conditions this testing is a question mark.

Nephin Beg, Noble Blue and Aghmorough Bridge are all entitled to be in the thick of things too if delivering their ‘A’ game.

SELECTION: JET SETTING JOHNNY

3.07 Easyfix Handicap Chase

Street Value showed tremendous toughness to battle his way to victory in the Porterstown Handicap Chase last time but this race over nearly a mile and a quarter shorter will ask different questions of him off top-weight. That was an attritional contest 34 days ago, though these look calmer waters now.

A chance is taken on Old Soul relishing the drop down in trip on his favoured testing ground for Liz Doyle. He’s been running reasonably and possibly didn’t fully stay last time at Fairyhouse. His mark of 114 looks workable.

Time To Rocco should be involved over what is probably her optimum trip with an ease in the ground. She didn’t quite catch fire last time in a mares’ handicap chase at the Fairyhouse Winter Festival but is capable when putting it all together.

SELECTION: OLD SOUL

3.42 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares (Pro/Am) Flat Race 2m

Gavin Cromwell won three bumpers from five domestic runners in that category in November, and had a second, a third and two fourths from his six Irish bumper representatives last month (following on from saddling one winner from just three bumper runners in October).

In short, he has been faring well in this category and that means his newcomer Cathedral Rocks demands some attention here. Harry Swan is booked for the Fastnet Rock five-year-old, who is out of an unraced sister to Irish Derby winner Trading Leather.

Familiar Dreams has already got blacktype in a listed bumper and was second in two other bumpers in May, including at this venue. Her experience will be an asset to her here, though she’d be entitled to sharpen up for the run a little after 97 days off the track.

Knockarina ran well when third at 80/1 at Fairyhouse last time for Charles Byrnes and can be on the premises again.
