ON the back of a phenomenal sale last month, connections at Cavan will be hoping that next Wednesday’s mixed two-day sale of performance horses, Irish Draught stock and sport horse youngstock will reap similar rewards.

With the former sector filling the bulk of the action, a total of 239 lots will sell on both all of the first day’s trading and the first half of the second. With just seven lots catalogued, although there are a few of the breed in the performance division, the Irish Draught sector is a bit light on numbers, while the concluding group of youngstock and broodmares delivers a mix of pedigrees

Day one

Ponies

Lot 1 Derrymore Snowball, reg 6yo gr m 128 cms by Moyralla Mint out of Moyralla Snowball (dam sire not recorded). Setting the ball rolling is this smart campaigner whose winnings exceed 100 SJI points. One for the smallest competitive rider, Snowball was placed seventh in the national young pony series at Mullingar, and competed on the Spring Tour 12 months ago. Fully measured for the coming season, she is described as being an ideal prospect for a competitive family.

Lot 24 Ardfry Mystery, reg 6yo gr g 148cms by Ardfry Cedar out of Ardfry Charisma (Gurteen King). One for the future could be this pony, the winner of 27 SJI points to date. Fully warranted and schooled across country, he is currently jumping at 1.10m level at home.

Lot 25 AMS Burning Ambition, reg 6yo gr g 148cms by Burning Daylight out of Blue Lands Rosey (Rory Rasputin). A pony with plenty of mileage, this pure-bred Connemara has competed in the Wexford Equestrian Stepping Stones league, has show jumped to win 33 SJI points, and taken part in RDS performance qualifiers. He has also competed in hunter-trials, eventing and combined training leagues, and is thought to have the scope to contest the RDS age classes later this year.

Lot 41 Oyster Catcher, reg 7yo gr m 148cms by Derrymore Duncan out of Cahercrea Misty (Drimcong Owen). Another example of the native breed is this mare, who has competed in classes up to 1.10m. She is the winner of 115 SJI points to date, has schooled acorss country and is only for sale as her rider is out of the pony ranks.

Lot 50 Hillside Grey Dawn, reg 12yo gr m 168cms by Balou du Rouet out of Hillside Adella (Albinor). A well-related jumping mare with a record up to 1.40m level, Grey Dawn has competed in Portugal this spring. Ideal for a junior, young rider or an amateur, she has additional paddock potential being a half-sister to the Oliver Townend CCI3*-winning event mare Miss Cooley.

Lot 69 Lenamore Lily Marlene, reg 7yo b m 168cms by Tolan R out of Lenamore Charlotte (HHS Brother Charlton). A good-moving mare with 74 SJI points, Lily Marlene competed in her age classes last year, delivering clear rounds at 1.25m level. Thought ideal for any discipline, she has schooled across the country and has a great temperament.

Lot 78 Todd (Tullabeg Buzz), reg 7yo dn g 165cms by Tullabeg Fusion out of Carmelito Tilly (Tannenhofs Carmelito S). By the very popular Tullabeg Fusion, this dun is one of the catalogue picks. Well-established on the flat, he has evented up to two-star level, winning 16 Eventing Ireland points. He was placed fifth in the prestigious CCIYH2* at Millstreet last June, and has clocked up numerous top 10 placings. Consistently good in all three phases, he is only being sold due to a change in circumstances.

Lot 95 Leitra Lad, reg 5yo b g 168cms by Cloneyhea Spellbound out of Morning Glow (Sir Rivie). This smart Irish Draught gelding was shown in hand as a youngster and was always in the ribbons. Last year, under saddle, he competed in the 2021 younster show jumping tour where he secured a place in the final. He also competed in two RDS performance Irish Draught qualifiers.

Hunters and All-Rounders

Lot 54 Creaghduff Maggie May, reg 10yo gr m 162 cms by Young Carrabawn out of Wild Grey (Merry Mate). This full Irish Draught mare has hunted with the Glasson Farmers Hunt for four seasons and, and as a father/daughter share, has competed up to 1.10 SJI level to win 12 SJI points.

Lot 83 Ben, reg 6yo ch g 16.2hh by Harkaway Lionhawk out of Manor Over Draught (Rockrimmon Sliver Diamond). Described as a leg in each corner type, this gelding has been shown in both Irish Draught and general showing classes. He has also successfully competed in dressage competitions and schooled across country. He is easy to handle by adults and children alike, and has also show jumped.

Three and four-year-olds

Lot 125 Ardragh Patriot, reg 4yo b g 163 cms by Ardragh Me O Moy out of Ardragh Duchess (Guidam). By the well-bred young jumping prospect Ardragh Me O Moy (Aganix du Seigneur), this is a well-related individual on both sides of his pedigree. The second dam Lady Ardagh bred Ardragh Cool Touch (1.40m), Ardragh Dancing Queen and Ardragh Mountain Dew as well as a three further graded performers. Not broken yet, but driving in long reins.

Lot 126 Castleroche Castle Queen, reg 4yo ch f 168cms by Exquis Oliver Q out of Castleroche Monica (Clover Hill). A half-sister to the American-based 1.45m jumper Castleroche Rebel (formerly partnered by John Floody), this filly is currently competing in training shows.

Lot 129 Rathdrum Duke, reg 4yo b g 165cms by Cobra 18 out of Rathdrum Queen (Garrison Royal). The fifth foal out of the grade A jumping mare Rathdrum Queen, this versatile youngster has won and been placed in in the show ring.

Lot 148 Unnamed, reg 3yo b g 167 cms by Lancelot out of Coney Island Cruise (Cruising). Another well-related individual, this gelding is a full brother to the advanced event horse Colacentric (CCI4*) recently exported to England and to the two-star jumper Fernhill Box Office. His dam, meanwhile, is a full sister to Cruise Alone, dam of the event horse Royal Cruising and Grand Prix show jumper Its Pronto Time.

Day two

PONIES

Lot 157 Kilshanny Abbey, reg 10yo sk m 138cms. An experienced grade A jumping pony (293 SJI points) with form up to Christmas of last year, this mare has also hunted and taken part in pony club activities. She is described as very well mannered, competitive, brave and honest.

OLDER HORSES

Lot 181 Shanalux K, reg 11yo b m 168cms by Lux Z out of Cornstown Ebony (Ard VDL Douglas). A possible for the young rider ranks, this experienced scopey mare has clocked up 164 SJI points in classes up to and including 1.30m.

Lot 203 Miss Louisiana, reg 6yo b m 165 cms by OBOS Quality out of Ballinteskin Venus (SIEC Livello). As a five-year-old this amateur-ridden, straightforward mare competed in the RDS qualifiers and HSI studbook classes. Very brave, she has also schooled cross country and has hunted.

Lot 213 Unnamed, reg 5yo b g 165 cms by Pointilliste out of Coevers Gypsey (Covers Diamond Boy). One for the traditionalists and the eventers, this good-moving gelding competed in a few shows last season and has schooled across country. Carrying a high percentage of thoroughbred blood and going back to Cruising, he features several international performers in his pedigree.

Lot 218 Priestown Qwintus, reg 5yo b g 170 cms by Pollox de Muze out of Wendoliene (Darco). The dam, who was also known at Syriana, was a grade A mare under John Floody, and has bred the top show jumper BP Castlefield (1.50m), ridden by Mark McAuley, and LCC Lui Two (1.30m). Having been given time to mature, he is described as being light on his feet with a good canter and quick off the floor.

THREE and FOUR-YEAR-OLDS

Lot 236 Java’s Kentucky, reg 3yo b g 160 cms by Kentucky Van’t Ruytershof out of Java’s Katie (Kannan). The standout lot of the age group, this gelding is out of a half-sister to HHS Java’s Gucci (1.50m), ridden by Mikey Pender, and to Java’s Geirgie B (1.50m).

Irish Draughts

Lot 247 Unnamed, reg ch 1yo f by Offaly Clover out of Illaninagh Cross (Holycross). A first foal, this good moving show prospect has great presence and is well grown.

Youngstock and Broodmares

Lot 248 Unnamed, reg 2yo gr f by Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet out of Newtown Annie (Shannnondale Sarco). Bred to perform, this filly hails from the direct maternal family of the event horses HHS Cooley (CCI4*), Sir Donovan (CCI4*) and Irish Moon.

Lot 256 Darcey Bussell, reg 14yo b m by Crosstown Dancer out of Maggie Ann At Home (Pasternak). This well-bred mare, whose dam is by a thoroughbred, was a multi-champion in the show ring. She has produced seven foals, including show jumpers and event horses, as well as a mare by Flex A Bill, who has achieved select status by the Horse Board.

Lot 282 Condos Cavalier I SC, 1yo gr f by Timone out of Sea Vienna (Radolin). A filly with an attractive pedigree, whose dam is a sibling to the event horse Sea Nationawide (CC13*). The sire’s breeding goes back to Cristallo 1 and Cornet Obolensky.
