Newbury Saturday

THE Owen Burrows-trained Minzaal looked to have the world at his feet when producing a storming run to land the Gimcrack Stakes as a juvenile, but he missed a huge chunk of last year, and was gaining his first win since York when landing the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, proving every bit as good as ever after a rare disappointment in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes.

Leaders

Under Jim Crowley, he raced freely under wraps for much of the race, but still had enough in reserve to cut down the leaders in the last furlong, beating Go Bears Go (Dave Loughnane/Rossa Ryan) and Dubawi Legend (Hugo Palmer/David Egan) by one and a quarter lengths and a head, with Rohaan just behind in fourth having briefly burst to the front a furlong out.

Sent off 4/1 co-favourite with Rohaan and Man Of Promise, Minzaal put his Ascot disappointment behind him with the cheekpieces he wore there left off, and Burrows now reckons trying something different in the Platinum Jubilee was a mistake in hindsight.

The winner is set to head to Haydock for the Sprint Cup there, and Jim Crowley feels Minzaal is better with a bit of cut underfoot, which augurs well for an autumn campaign.

Go Bears Go was unlucky at Haydock on his penultimate start and is another who failed to give his true running at Royal Ascot. This was much more like it, and his trainer believes he can improve further.

The horse to take from the race is Dubawi Legend, who was having his first start over six furlongs having been fancied to run well in the 2000 Guineas and looks a sprinter on this evidence. He raced powerfully, and while racing on the stands rail may have been a help, he did have to do all his own work there and can only improve on this now that his trainer has decided to stick to six furlongs.

Scorching Jack

Earlier on the card, Grocer Jack landed the Listed Steventon Stakes over one and a quarter miles for William Haggas and Tom Marquand.

A dual Group 3 winner for Waldemar Hickst when trained in Germany, the five-year-old entire was entitled to go close at this level, but still put up an eye-catching display to beat Cadillac by five lengths having set a scorching gallop from the off.

Most of his form has come on softer ground, but he seemed to bounce off the quicker ground here, and seemed to produce a career-best performance to justify 5/4 favouritism, for all the runner-up didn’t look to be giving too generously.

Flying Boy

The Super Sprint saw Eddie’s Boy make all the running for Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle at 15/2, with Rod Millman’s Woolhampton running a fine race to be second.

Once again, the high numbers were favoured, with the winner coming from stall 21. The last winner of the Super Sprint to be drawn in single figures was Charles The Great in 2011.
