MAAREK has been an outstanding sprinter over the years and, to judge from last Saturday’s effort in the Listed totescoop6 Beverley Bullet, the eight-year-old’s winning days are far from over.

Coming from last to first under Jamie Spencer, he found the gaps and kept on strongly against the rails to beat 100/30 favourite Line Of Reason by a neck with the filly Ridge Ranger just over a length away in third after making much of the running. Sent off at 5/1, this was Maarek’s thirteenth career success. Quite lightly raced since winning the Duke of York Stakes at the Dante meeting last year, his first victory for Evanna McCutcheon, he clearly retains all his ability and an exciting autumn schedule beckons. “We weren’t sure whether to run him here or at Newmarket,” Miss McCutcheon said. “The ground was lively enough for him. We’ll kick on with him now and he’ll go for the Flying Five at the Curragh on Champions weekend. He’s also in the Abbaye, which he’s won before, another race in France and the British Champion Sprint after that.”
