Newmarket Saturday

THE Listed Montrose Fillies’ Stakes was one of a trio of listed races at Newmarket, but this contest is not famed for producing future stars, with the last four winners racking up just one win between them subsequently.

Given that 84-rated Kawida (Ed Walker/Tom Marquand) beat Flash Betty – having her 18th race, and beaten in sellers in the summer – it’s unlikely that this renewal will be bucking a trend, and a 13lb rise for the winner looks a little harsh on balance.

On the other hand, the 9/2 winner is closely related to Zaaki, promises to progress with time, and should stay at least a mile and a quarter next season.

The Listed James Seymour Stakes went to the progressive Bay Bridge for old allies Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore, the 6/5 favourite beating a solid yardstick in the shape of 2020 Cambridgeshire winner Majestic Dawn by half a length, with the pair well clear.

The winner was receiving 4lb from the runner-up, who has a similar BHA rating, so didn’t need to improve on paper, but he appeals as the type to pick up a pattern race or two next year, and his trainer hopes that there will be more to come.

“Bay Bridge had a little niggle in the summer that kept him off,” said Sir Michael, “but his attitude was good there today. He’s a professional horse with a good mind and I think he’ll stay a mile and a half.”

Most impressive winner of the day was Charlie Appleby’s 11/8 favourite Zakouski (William Buick), who made all and had the Ben Marshall Stakes in safe keeping some way out, in the end coming home three and a half lengths ahead of Stormy Antarctic.

The winner was the pick on ratings, and lacked nothing in fitness on his first UK start since winning the same contest 12 months ago. He has been a Group 2 winner at Meydan for the past two years, and is sure to head back for the carnival there again.
