WITH a significantly reduced value, though still worth $1.8 million to the winner, the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Stakes was the most important flat race run at the weekend, and it was captured by a four-year-old colt who comes from a branch of a female line that has provided great success for Pin Oak Stud in Kentucky. The farm is owned by the 94 years young Josephine Abercrombie.

Horses have always been a part of Josephine Abercrombie’s life. She was an accomplished rider in her youth, competing successfully in the Saddlebred world. She originally rode quarter-horses on her father’s ranch in west Texas but started taking lessons to ride Saddlebreds before the age of 10. That led to her competing in horse shows, including at Madison Square Garden where in 1953 at the National Horse Show she won a dozen blue ribbons.
