TONY Martin and Colin Keane broke through to enjoy Group 1 success on the flat last weekend when the five-year-old Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Laganore produced a fine effort to capture the Premio Lydia Tesio. Owned and bred by the Regan’s Newtown Anner Stud, this victory has earned the breeders a nomination for the October Connolly’s Red Mills/The Irish Field Breeder of the Month award.
The Regans have enjoyed a number of good days with Laganore, but what a way to end her racing career when she travelled to Italy for one of their very few remaining Group 1 races, having finished third in the same contest a year ago.
She now goes to the breeding shed as the winner of seven races, and she warmed up for her biggest triumph with victory in the Group 3 Denny Cordell Lavarack and Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes at Gowran Park. She will be a most attractive addition to the broodmare band at Newtown Anner Stud, previous recipients of a Connolly’s Red Mills/The Irish Field Breeder of the Month award.
The first three dams of Laganore are now responsible for a Group 1 winner. Lady Bones, the dam of the most recent, was purchased 10 years ago as a yearling by Newtown Anner Stud from Oaklawn Stud.
The first foal of her dam Leukippids (Sadler’s Wells) is now an unraced half-sister to the dual Hong Kong Group 1 winner Blazing Speed (Dylan Thomas). He earned in excess of £4.35 million and has been one of the most popular horses to race there for many years. In Hong Kong he won twice at Group 1 level, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, and was also placed many times at that level.
The third dam of Laganore is the winning mare Teslami and her best offspring were the brothers, and sires, Spartacus and Johan Cruyff, both sons of Danehill (Danzig). The former won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes in Ireland and Gran Criterium in Italy, while Johan Cruyff’s biggest wins were in the Group 2 Gallinule Stakes and in the richly endowed Hong Kong Derby. A third stakes winner out of Teslami was Meteor Shower, again by Danehill, and he was successful at Group 3 level in South Africa.
Showing how well the family has crossed with Danehill, Teslami is also grandam of the New Zealand-bred Super Satin (Danehill Dancer) and he too won the Hong Kong Derby. This year the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) stakes winner Orderofthegarter has appeared on the page.
This is an outstanding female line and featuring a generation back is the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby winner and champion US turf filly De La Rose (Nijinsky) and her full-brother, the Grade 1 Suburban Handicap winner and sire Upper Nile. De La Rose also bred a Grade 1 winner.
