SUE Ann Foley, daughter of JP and Noreen McManus, will surely have been among the throngs enjoying golf this week at Adare Manor. She will also have been keeping an eye on the racing in England, and not, as you might imagine, for horses carrying her dad’s famous silks.

Sue Ann and her husband Cian own Islanmore Stud in Croom, and it was there that they bred Free Wind, winner on Saturday of the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks. Last year the daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) carried owner George Strawbridge’s colours to success in the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes and Group 3 Prix Minerve, and surely the only way is up now for this admirable filly.

Purchased through Blandford Bloodstock for 325,000gns as a yearling, Free Wind is the second foal of the listed winner Alive Alive Oh (Duke Of Marmalade). She was trained for Sue Ann by Tommy Stack and had been purchased as a yearling by John O’Byrne. Her first foal is Shebl (Gleneagles), and hopefully he will eventually get his head in front, as he has been placed numerous times.

Alive Alive Oh’s third foal is the intriguing Martinstown (Galileo). Named in honour of JP McManus’ home, he is co-owned with Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor and is in training in Ballydoyle. Winner of his sole outing to date, he holds a number of tasty entries and is a horse who will be worth following. Sue Ann and Cian have a yearling colt by Galileo at Islanmore to look forward to in the future.
