THE Curragh’s Anna Nangle featured in last week’s coverage of youth eventing and here appears as winner of Section A of the older RDS Connemara performance hunter qualifier at Rincoola last Saturday.

In both instances, 15-year-old Nangle was on board her mother Fiona’s Liscannor Tulira (248 points).

The 13-year-old Tulira Robuck gelding, who was repatriated into this country in February, was bred by Thomas O’Connor out of Liscannor Lass (by Oisin). The rider, who is coached by Jane Kinsella, competed in the Intermediate Pony Club combined training final at Dublin last August, and in a working hunter class, on another Connemara, Blackwoodland Breeze.

Ballindaggin’s Lauren Baker secured the second RDS ticket on her own 10-year-old Castle Gigolo gelding Deerpark Rocky (246) who is out of Tommie Quinn’s Currachmore Cashel mare Newtown Morning Glory.

In case the competition couldn’t take place at Dublin without Charlie of Blakehill in the line-up, the good news is that Galway’s Ciara Nee secured a qualifying ticket on Caitriona Curran’s now 15-year-old grey gelding as winner of Section B on Saturday with 249.5 points.

A son of Coosheen Stormboy, Charlie of Blakehill, who was bred in Spiddal by Joan Clancy out of the Champion Bob mare, Atlantic Lady Joan, also qualified last year at Rincoola.

Co Kildare’s Eliza-Jane Queally picked up the second ticket on offer here with Rachel Brew’s eight-year-old Martan Phaidin Mhoir gelding Caraun Ferdy (247.5) who she competes at EI100 (J) level.

Dublin bound

Owner/riders won both divisions of the five to seven-year-old class. In Section A, the honours went to Julianstown’s Moya Teeling and her seven-year-old Shambo Jimmy gelding Shanbo Myles (236.5 points), another combination who qualified at Rincoola last season.

Bred outside Navan by Noel Farrell, the successful grey is out of the Monaghanstown Fionn mare Morning Mist Star. It’s difficult for the younger ponies to qualify in these classes but the five-year-old Fear Beag Bui mare Kinamara Lady Destiny (235.5) did so in second place here under Caoimhe Eivers.

This dun was bred by Michael J. Burke out of Millicent Destiny, by Ashfield Festy.

There were 26 starters in that division and the same in Section B where Wexford’s Abbey O’Driscoll came out on top with her Mountain Cascade gelding Caoranbeg Comanche (239).

This six-year-old grey was bred by Caoilfhinn O’Malley out of Gallowstown Bibi (by Commanding Hero). (See Pony Tales on page 98).

Last August, when ridden by his then owner Ciara O’Malley, Newgrange Brady finished second in the five to seven-year-old class at Dublin.

Now owned by Ciara Evans, the grey gelding secured his place the line-up next month when second here on 237.5 points under Emma Murray. Newgrange B was a winner at the recent North East Connemara Pony Breeders Show.
