GOOD Counsel College hosted the latest leg of the TRI Equestrian Interschools league on Sunday in Wexford Equestrian Centre.

All classes were on offer and the day commenced with the Cooney Furlong-sponsored Primary Teams competition. This produced some excellent jumping and the mixed team from Ballindaggin, Riverchapel and Gaelscoil Arklow of Toffee ridden by Freya Fitzgerald, Ollie (Lia Brennan), Tom Sparrow (Kayla Brennan) and Nova (Lauren Timmons) were victorious ahead of St Brigid’s Grange NS/Tullow NS.

The latter was represented by Pablo (Una Farrell), Willow (Lauren Bailey), Paddy (Cillin Tobin), Bailey (Muireann Tooher) to take second place while Screen NS teammates Bubbles (Kate Kelly), SHL Little Rocket (Ellen Cash) and Bubbles (Faye Kelly) placed third. Rathangan NS was the best turned out team.

The 55cm class was won in fine style by Cian Cusack on Henry for Butlerstown NS ahead of Mai Donovan on Delilah for The Rower in second while Shannon Griffith riding Mable for Screen NS place third.

The EII 70cm league class produced a win and 10 points for Kilrane National School’s Hazel Slattery riding Brioele Mist with Shanbo Hazel’s Boy and Julie McDonald for Holy Cross claimed eight points for second and Patrick Fitzgerald on 63AM representing Faithlegg NS in third.

The EII novice teams, sponsored on the day by Glanbia, was very well supported and it was the red team from local school Loreto Wexford who claimed the first place rosettes. The school was represented by Faye Murphy on Leo, Curraghmore Sparrow ridden by Ashley Durack, Kate Walsh on Rathmanna Check and Tomoka Spots ridden by Kiera Crowther.

The team saw off rivals St Declan’s Community College’s Zeus (Kiera Reilly), Aoife Lenihan on Dudes Law, Darragh Walsh riding Hugo and Conor Cusack (Annadale Royal Mist) who had to settle for second.

The Loreto Wexford blue team of Jess Murphy on Phoebe, Lilly Mae Berry on Skylanna Scatman, Katie O’Connor on Alkadream and Cora Finn on Shakespeare Romeo Montague were third. The best turned out prize went to Loreto Wexford’s white team.

Fun all the way

The fun novice class went the way of Kiltealy NS’s Aimee Bowe on Tincey. Sean Bishop on Ted and Ava Donovan on Nellie, representing St Peter’s and St Mary’s New Ross, were second and third.

The Equieire 90cm qualifier produced qualifying rounds for Good Counsel College pupil Aaron McPhillips on Daylight, Kilkenny College representative Lily Redmond on Best Buddie, Newbridge College’s Mia Browne on Basil Brush, St Declan’s Conor Cusack on Killowen Dasher and Loreto Wexford riders Faye Murphy on Atlantic Charm and Kate Walsh on Rathmanna Check.

Win for Presentation Wexford

The open classes concluded a busy day’s show jumping and the Presentation Wexford team of Charlie (Isabelle Barry), SIA (Eva Mulligan), Cody (Mia Meyler) and Starlight (Kate Cullen) triumphed in the TRI Equestrian open teams’ class.

The team from St Mary’s New Ross of Murphy (Anna Lambert), Sandy (Hannah Langton) and Mike (Emma Kehoe) were the runners-up. Third place went to Gorey Community School, represented by Des (Joe Dunne), Billy (Ciara O’Connor), Sparrow (Lauren Spencer) and Abbey Brooke Aurora (Angelica McGee) with Dominican College Wicklow in fourth.

Victory for Sophie Wilson

Colaiste Bride Carew’s Sophie Wilson on Scarlett Cruise won the TRI Equestrian open individual class with Loreto Wexford rider Kate O’Leary on East Coast Pennywise in second and Blackwater Community School’s Molly Kenneally on Kilcully Rocky in third.

The final class of the day was the Horse Sport Ireland 1.10cm class which produced two qualifying rounds for Gorey Community School’s Ciara O’Connor on Only Dun and Angelica McGee on Abbeybrooke Aurora.

The action now moves to Barnadown this weekend where Gorey Community School are the hosts.
