True Self made a victorious return to action in the BetVictor Irish EBF Vintage Tipple Stakes at Gowran Park on Wednesday evening.

The Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old had ended 2018 with a run of three wins, including listed successes at Bath and Newmarket.

She duly picked up where she left off in this one-mile-six-furlong heat, travelling well for Colin Keane as Echo Park set the early gallop.

Her main market rival, Jaega, was the first to set sail for home but when Keane asked True Self to pick up, she seized the advantage with the minimum of fuss and went on to win by a comfortable three-quarters of a length.

Keane said of the 1/2 favourite: “She’s progressed no end since winning her maiden on the flat and she just seems to be getting better with every run. She’s a nice filly to look forward to during the summer, hopefully.

“She had a nice blow and I didn’t want to be hard on her for no reason. I think she’ll come on fitness-wise from it.”
