MARK Johnston’s Main Edition got up close home to give Mark Johnston back-to-back victories in the Group 2 German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf.

A week on from a German 2000 Guineas that was dominated by British raiders, only two travelled over for the fillies’ equivalent.

Tom Dascombe’s Iconic Choice was sent off favourite after finishing seventh behind Hermosa at Newmarket, but she was ultimately disappointing and filled the same spot again.

Andreas Wholer’s Axana proved a tough nut to crack but in typically gritty Johnston-style, Main Edition battled gamely under Joe Fanning to win the one-mile prize to add to her Royal Ascot victory in the Albany Stakes last year.

“She was very brave in the closing stages,” said Johnston. “She looks a good buy (62,000 guineas) now having won the Albany as well, she’s very valuable.

“Hopefully she can go on to bigger things, but everything is a bonus now.

“We’ll go home and think about the Coronation at Ascot, see how she is, obviously it’s a possibility. She saw the mile out really well there.”
