FOLLOWING last night’s thrilling individual jumping final in which Britain’s Ben Maher and Explosion W claimed gold, all of the horses presented at this evening’s second jumping horse inspection were accepted, and the stage is now set for the team competition to begin tomorrow evening at 7pm in Tokyo (11am Irish time).

As reported yesterday, Shane Sweetnam and Alejandro come into the Irish team, replacing Cian O’Connor and Kilkenny who finished join-seventh in yesterday’s final but have withdrawn following a nose bleed to the horse.

Also out of the team competition is Britain’s Scott Brash, who is replaced by 22-year-old Harry Charles, and USA’s McLain Ward will start at his fourth Olympic Games tomorrow with Contagious, replacing Kent Farrington (Gazelle).

For Germany, Christian Kukuk (Mumbai) has been replaced by Maurice Tebbel (Don Diarado). Further changes may be made up to two hours before the competition begins.

A total of 19 teams begin tomorrow’s qualifier, with the top 10 making it through to Saturday’s final where they will jump for team medals.

Ireland have been drawn ninth to go. Shane Sweetnam will be first to go for Ireland and ninth into the arena. Bertram Allen will go in 28th place and Darragh Kenny will be 47th to go.
