VINCENT Byrne claimed his second championship title of the day at the Cavan Indoor Championships on Sunday when he rode Ivor Broderick’s Belgian-bred stallion Cartier VDL (Carrera VDL x Corland) to the top spot in the four-year-old final.

Judges Ian Ferron, Jonathan Smyth and John Floody awarded the top mark of 198.2 to Byrne, which was almost 14 marks ahead of their closest rival.

“He’s a very nice horse. I had him at the start of the year for a couple of months and then he was back in Kylemore for the breeding season,” Byrne told The Irish Field.

“I got him back and he was second in the four-year-old final in the Breeders’ Classic, he won the preliminary final and then was second in the final.

“He is a very classical kind of a jumper and has a very good canter. "He is a lovely model and probably ticks a few boxes for most judges. He has a lovely temperament and has really improved and come on from the week in Barnadown. The little bit of mileage really shows.”

Twenty-two combinations qualified for the class which was sponsored by Lee Johnston Farrier.

The runner-up spot went to Cavan’s own junior rider Camryn Clarke aboard Jordan Coyle’s Diamond Candy Hill (Sligo Candy Boy x Hills Diamond Double). Bred by Peter Kearney, the duo have been competing since the end of August and have consistently produced double clear rounds.

Daren Hopkins, riding the Ballywalter Stables-owned and bred Estoril BW (Emerald van’t Ruytershof x Carinjo), finished in third place on 181.6.

McFadden Equine’s home-bred Kleio De Muse (I’m Special De Muze x Verdi) took fourth with a score of 163.6 with MacKenzie Healy in the saddle.

Fifth went to Wesley Ryan and Annelies Loose’s Dutch-bred stallion Orvil Grandia (Highway M TN x Cardento) with 161.9 points. Vincent Byrne and his second mount, Annmarie Dunne’s Belgian-bred Gordan Cushlas RSZ Z (Ganesh Hero Z x Canaletto), completed the line-up in sixth place on a score of 159.3.
