WEXFORD’S Harry Allen was firmly in the spotlight with a win in the €200,000 1.60m CSI4* in Gijon, Spain, last week with older brother Bertram also collecting two wins in the space of 24 hours at the same event.

One of only five combinations to go clear in both rounds of Sunday’s Grand Prix, Harry was home in a blistering 45.65 with Qin Yu Pang’s Calculatus, leaving Britain’s Jack Whitaker (Equine America Valmy De La Lande) in the dust on 46.47 with cousin Robert Whitaker third aboard Vermento.

Brother Bertram’s first win came when he partnered Irish-bred 11-year-old gelding Pacino Amiro (ISH) to victory in Thursday’s 1.45m two-phase class.

Allen and this Simon Scott-bred and Aiden McGrory-owned son of Pacino were just a bit faster (37.16) than Jack Whitaker (37.42) who was relegated to second place yet again aboard his Grand Prix ride Valmy de La Lande (Mylord Carthago*HN).

Less than half a second slower again was Italy’s Giulia Martinengo Marquet with Scuderia 1918 Quick And Easy 3 (Quick Orion D’Elle).

This pair was followed by Mariano Martinez Bastida (ESP) and his 10-year-old Zangersheide-stallion, Quark de Preuilly Z (Quaprice Boimargot).

The top five was completed by Emeric George and Dune du Ru (Vagabond de la Pomme).

Irish rider Jenny Rankin was also double clear in this class with Imar (Carerra VDL x Dumara).

Double duty

Betram followed up with another win in Friday’s 1.55m jump-off class, this time riding the nine-year-old gelding Edison de Hus (Conrad x Galoubet du Rouet), owned by Ballywalter Farm and Maxi Lill.

Ten combinations went forward to the jump-off, where Bertram’s clear in 45.59 seconds saw him take the top prize, relegating Jack Whitaker to second place for the third time.

Harry also featured in the prizes in this class, finishing in fourth after a double clear with Calculatus (Cachassine x C’est La Vie). Irish riders Emily Turkington (Cornet) and Jenny Rankin (Imar) finished sixth and seventh respectively in this class.

Bertram then rounded off a very successful week on Sunday with the second of two podium finishes aboard new ride Gary De Cerisy (Up To You GFE) who he piloted into third place in the 1.30m jump-off and the 1.30m special two-phase class. He also had a third with Emmylou (Billy Mexico) in the 1.45m against the clock.

Allen was recently voted The Irish Field/Gain Equine Nutrition Star of the Month for July after his five-star win in the LGCT Grand Prix of La Coruna.
