MANY people attending last week’s Dublin Horse Show met or saw Verity Smith and her guide dog Luna, who took time out from their whirlwind week to visit The Irish Field stand.Accompanied by Maura Ebbs, Verity who is visually impaired, is an inspirational lady who lives life to the full. In short, nothing stops this very articulate lady who is very much sunny side up. “I’ve had a wonderful week at the Dublin Horse Show. We have met so many people, I wore a special green dress for Ladies Day. We attended so many fun things and everyone was so nice and welcoming. We took a trip down Grafton Street and people were so nice. You could feel the good heart of the people which is lovely,” said Verity who has been riding since she can remember. When she started to lose her sight at the age of eight, Verity had to give up eventing and concentrate on dressage. Verity is highly ambitious for the future and is working towards competing in both Dressage and Para Dresssage in Toyko 2020 under the French flag. When competing, the rider has nine people at various points along the dressage ring who help orientate her. “I am working towards competing in both dressage - the same as other sighted dressage riders - and also para dressage. Unfortunately my good horse is sick and I hope we have found a replacement. However, I have to raise funds to purchase the new horse so that’s what I am currently working on. I’m hoping that both individuals and companies will consider supporting me in my goal,” said Verity who also visits many schools and gives talk to both children and parents.
