LEROY Chambers has enjoyed the perfect start to horse ownership as the Irish Sport Horse gelding Quality By Quantum, who he runs in partnership with Quantum Sport Horses’ Claire Dubowski, won the Childéric Saddles four-year-old final and league at the Stepping Stones to Success league in Wexford Equestrian on Tuesday.

“I told Leroy that having horses was always like this, winning a nice bit of cash and being presented with rosettes, sashes and rugs!” said rider/producer Luke Drea who was delighted that both owners travelled over from England for the final. “The horse has done everything asked of him to date and will have a bit of a break now. After that, we’ll be guided by how he is going but might well do the Young Eventhorse Series with him.”

Quality By Quantum was lying third (52) of the 20 starters after dressage as Anne Marie Dunphy had awarded her top score of 55.5 marks to the Gillian Beale King-ridden JFH Golden Spear while the Leila Barker-partnered mare Boleybawn Oliva was in second spot on 53.1.

Disappointingly for connections, the leader dropped right out of contention when failing to match his flat performance in the Derby Arena where judges Ian Fearon (show jumping) and Britain’s J.P. Sheffield were impressed most by Quality To Quantum (140.5). So too was the conformation and type judge Johnny Kyle who awarded the bay his top score of 28 marks for a winning total of 220.5.

Fortunately for Beale King and for Piltown, Co Kilkenny owner Richard Ames, they had another string to their bow in the shape of the Sligo Candy Boy gelding Belline Ames To Please who moved up into second when completing on 213.3. This bay was bred in Co Westmeath by Lorraine Keith out of the Germino d’Elle mare Native Des Merveilles.

Barker dropped a place to third with Boleybawn Oliva (212.1) who she purchased late last year from Co Wicklow’s Ronan Rothwell. The Jorado bay is out of the Cicero Z Van Paemal mare C-Jumps.

Quality By Quantum, who was sourced as a three-year-old by Drea and Dubowski through Diarmuid Ryan, is by retired Oldenburg stallion OBOS Quality 004. He was bred in Co Clare by Kevin Barry out of the Cruising mare Mythical Cruise who was out of a mare by Bahrain.

Childéric Saddles four-year-old league – 1, Quantum Sport Horses and Leroy Chambers’s Quality By Quantum (Luke Drea) 34 points; 2, Leila Barker’s Boleybawn Oliva (Owner) 25; 3, Charles and Catherine Harold Barry’s Ballyvonare Rascal (Sian Coleman) 24.5; 4, Rita Morgan and Linda Murphy’s Shirsheen Rocketman (Linda Murphy) 23; 5, Richard Ames’s Belline Ames To Please (Gillian Beale King) 21.5; 6, Richard Ames’s JFH Golden Spear (Gillian Beale King) 19.
