IT was described by auctioneer Martin Donohoe as “the best foal sale in recent years” and indeed, the returns from Goresbridge last week were certainly most encouraging. While not all breeders reaped the rewards, the renewal closed on a 10-year high, delivering a clearance rate of 55% (39% in 2018) together with an average of €2,716 (€2,357). These figures were accompanied by a top price of €12,000, and while the reduced catalogue ran over just two days this year, a further 15 foals realised in excess of €5,000.

Of course, the trade was, as always divided – but this time it was significantly less so, as the better pedigrees, models and presentation outweighed the remainder. “I haven’t seen as many satisfied vendors at this sale for many, many years,” stated Martin Donohoe. “It was a great boost, and a much-needed shot in the arm for the breeders in Ireland.”
