MONDAY’S racing at Maisons-Laffitte could well have a bearing on the 2000 Guineas. The Prix Djebel was won by the André Fabre-trained Al Wukair, who is now clear second favourite behind Churchill. He won in easily the fastest time of four races at 1,400 metres and gets a timefigure of 112 (Churchill’s best is 115), though that seemed to have plenty to do with most others not being truly-run. Indeed, the leaders in the Djebel might have overdone things somewhat, with Al Wukair (104.5% finishing speed) coming from last to collar National Defense (100.7%).
