FABILIS set a new record for the Tattersalls August Sale when selling for 350,000gns during the second and final session on Wednesday.

Whilst the sale is only in its second year, the price eclipsed the 220,000gns set at last year’s inaugural sale.

The clearance rate on the second day was 94% whilst the turnover was more than double yesterday’s opening session, taking the sale proceeds to more than five million guineas.

Trained by Ralph Beckett and consigned by Juddmonte Farms, Fabilis was bought by agent Peter Doyle for 350,000gns on behalf of Prince Najd.

The triple winning son of Frankel was victorious on his most recent start at Newmarket just five days ago and was offered with a Timeform rating of 104.

"He is for Prince Najd, a very long established client," said Doyle. "I bought for his family many years ago. He is a lovely horse, I didn't think he'd make that much, but lots of people liked him. He comes from a very good operation, it is always nice to buy a horse from Juddmonte. The horse passed all the vets very well.

"The immediate plan will be to go and race in Saudi Arabia and aim for the Crown Prince Cup. We have had some success in the race before."

Competition for the three-year-old colt was fierce and included buyers from Australia and throughout the Gulf region.

GOING JUMPING

National Hunt bloodstock agent Tom Malone secured the second highest priced lot on the second day when the four-year-old Zabeel Champion was knocked down to Mags O’Toole for 185,000gns on behalf of Malone, who was on a flight to Germany at the time.

The son of Poet's Voice has won on six occasions for trainer Mark Johnston. He was offered with a Timeform rating of 112 and secured by O’Toole after she saw off underbidder Eric Cantillon. Zabeel Champion is expected to now join the Paul Nicholls yard.

Another lot that looks destined for the new Bahrain Turf Series is Tawaareq, the Shadwell Estates offering who was knocked down to Bahraini owner and trainer Fawzi Nass stood alongside agent Oliver St Lawrence for 180,000gns.

"I think he will handle the firm turf ground, there will be plenty of races for him now. He is rated 90 so there are plenty of options within the international series. He is a nice horse, he vetted clean so we are pleased," said Nass.

The son of Shamardal has won twice including on his most recent start at Newbury and was offered with a Timeform rating of 94.
