Dee Capo, a bumper winner at Galway last month, may be good enough to score on his hurdling debut.

The Gordon Elliott-trained gelding had shaped with promise on his initial two runs, before readily disposing of the opposition at the western venue last time. In a race which consists more of quantity than quality, he certainly appears to be one of the stronger candidates.

Intent Approach has been purchased by leading owner J.P. McManus since finishing runner-up on his racecourse debut at the Punchestown Festival.

Trainer Charles Byrnes is more than capable of having one ready after a break, so the Mahler gelding rates a serious threat. The betting market may well provide the best guide as to his fitness on his first appearance since April.

SELECTION: DEE CAPO

Flamborough should get off the mark at the sixth attempt now that he reverts to maiden company. Formerly a smart horse on the level for Charlie Johnston, the son of Farhh showed fair ability on his first three runs over flights.

However, he then upped his performance further when switching to handicap class on his most recent two outings under National Hunt rules. Last time, he ran what was arguably a career best, switching back to the flat to claim fourth in a very competitive renewal of the Naas November Handicap.

Jasmin De Cotte is perhaps the most intriguing of the unexposed debutants in the race. The form of the point-to-point in which he finished runner-up at Monksgrange in March could hardly have worked out better with both the third and fourth winning their next starts.

SELECTION: FLAMBOROUGH

Grange Walk may be able to exploit a lenient mark over flights to gain a sixth career win.

John Ryan’s eight-year-old is a very smart chaser, although he has been let down by his jumping on occasions. The Edward Gleeson-owned gelding reverted to hurdles for his most recent two runs, finishing runner-up in both.

However, this represents a further ease in grade so he should be well capable of adding to his sole win over flights.

Young Lucy, a bumper winner at this track in May, is relatively unexposed over hurdles having had just the four starts thus far. Tony Martin has few equals when it comes to placing horses to best advantage in handicap company, so the mare has to be respected off a light weight.

SELECTION: GRANGE WALK

Abi’s Champ sets a fair standard having won two bumpers prior to finishing third in a listed contest at Gowran last time.

A half-sister to a point-to-point winner, the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old should appreciate stepping up in trip on her first start over hurdles. It will certainly take an above-average newcomer to lower her colours.

However, in the shape of Banprionsa, she could well face a potentially high-class opponent. A point-to-point winner at Lingstown in March, the daughter of Kayf Tara was subsequently bought by Kenny Alexander of Honeysuckle fame.

Solitary Man can regain the winning thread having only just lost out over course and distance on his most recent start.

A confirmed front runner, the Enda Bolger-trained five-year-old has improved throughout the season as he stepped up in trip.

Well treated by these race conditions, a proven stayer who handles an ease in the ground, he can gain the most significant success of his career to date.

Brave Fortune is the potential dark horse in the line-up. Having not got the clearest of runs when mid-division in the Goffs Defender Bumper at the Punchestown Festival, the Pat Doyle-trained four-year-old made a winning reappearance when easily landing a point-to-point at Castletown-Geoghegan last month.

SELECTION: SOLITARY MAN

Letsbeclearaboutit, a gelding who has the potential to take high rank amongst the staying novices this season, can remain unbeaten over fences.

A leading novice hurdler last term, the Gavin Cromwell-trained eight-year-old finished fourth in Grade 1 company at both the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals in the spring. At his best on a testing surface, the Alymer Stud-owned gelding made a very pleasing debut over the larger obstacles at Gowran Park in September.

Solness has to be a danger given his proven ability and previous experience over fences. The Joseph O’Brien trained gelding has finished runner-up on his last two starts but has been unfortunate to bump into an opponent who is well above average for this time of the season.

SELECTION: LETSBECLEARABOUTIT

Sir Bob is a guaranteed stayer who can make his presence felt in what is quite a competitive affair. Although now in the veteran stages of his career, the Robert Tyner-trained 11-year-old ended last season in great heart, finishing runner-up in decent handicap chases at both the Fairyhouse and Punchestown festivals.

With no worries on either ground or stamina fronts, the J.P. McManus-owned gelding should at least make the frame.

History Of Fashion quite clearly has two ways of running but, if on a going day, Pat Fahy’s gelding is more than good enough for a race of this nature.

Runner-up in the Leinster National last season, he was then just a place behind Sir Bob at Punchestown subsequently. At these revised weights, there is unlikely to be much between the pair.

SELECTION: SIR BOB

Como Park should be able to gain a first win over hurdles, having shaped with plenty of promise on his recent handicap debut.

A smart handicapper on the flat, the Henry de Bromhead-trained gelding ran well in his maidens before progressing again when stepping up in distance last time.

Travelling well throughout, he was undone by lack of experience when he was novicey at a couple of flights. With the benefit of that experience, the four-year-old can score under Rachael Blackmore.

Gorgeous Suspect had hinted that he had the ability to win over hurdles prior to landing a maiden at Limerick in July.

Off the track since then, Aidan Howard’s seven-year-old reverts to handicap class off what appears a fair mark.
