SUNDAY'S meeting at Wexford has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track.

The track failed to pass an inspection on Sunday morning following heavy rain on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Paul Moloney said: "Unfortunately the heavy rain we had at Wexford yesterday afternoon into yesterday evening has left us unfit for racing and there hasn’t been sufficient improvement overnight. We had 20mm of rain yesterday when we were only due to get 5mm prior to racing. It’s currently raining here this morning which is more rain that wasn’t forecast.

“We were in a good place on Saturday morning despite over 30mm of rain since entries on Tuesday but the downpours yesterday evening brought significantly more rain than what was forecast and we’ve been left with no option but to cancel the fixture today.

“We will liaise with Horse Racing Ireland in relation to rescheduling this meeting.”

Racing at Down Royal on Sunday goes ahead and the ground is described as soft, yielding to soft in places.

Monday's Curragh meeting, the first flat turf fixture of the year, remains in some doubt. The track was described as heavy but fit for racing on Sunday morning. However, there is a possibility of approximately 2mm-5mm or rainfall on Sunday, with the chance of further showers on Monday morning, so officials will continue to monitor the situation.
