Highlight of the day

From just four runners across the opening two days of the Galway Festival, Dermot Weld registered two winners and two seconds - including a double on Tuesday. The Rosewell maestro doesn’t come to Ballybrit with the same depth of challenge as was the case in years gone by but he certainly made his presence felt in the day-two feature event.

Ride of the day

The concluding Caulfield Industrial Handicap looked to be run at a strong pace and Colin Keane timed his run beautifully to strike late on 4/1 joint-favourite Complete Fiction. The champion jockey stayed out of trouble on the outer and never panicked.

Performance of the day

It often takes a smart two-year-old to win on debut at Galway, particularly in the traditionally hot Colm Quinn BMW Irish EBF Fillies Maiden, and successful debutante Purple Lily rates a high-class prospect for the Paddy Twomey team.

Gamble of the day

Bells On Her Toes was rock-solid in the market and duly delivered with a smooth, three-length victory in the Caulfieldindustrial.com Handicap. Available at 8/1 earlier in the day, she returned as the 7/2 favourite.

In-running carnage of the day

It was all change in the closing stages of the Colm Quinn BMW Irish EBF Fillies Maiden for two-year-olds. Well-backed 5/2-winning favourite Purple Lily traded as high as 20/1 in-running, while promising runner-up Tannola (SP 11/4) touched as low as 1/20 before being mowed down close home. Coeur D’or (SP 14/1) also went out to as big as 49/1 in-running on his way to winning the feature.

Unluckiest runner of the day

Arch Enemy looked as though he might have done enough to collect in the final race of the day only to be mugged close home by Complete Fiction. He wasn’t the quickest into stride and had to burn petrol to get a position early, while also having to scrimmage a little more than the winner for daylight approaching the straight.

Quote of the day

“I’m a part-time farmer now and married. My wife Rachel will be watching in, so I’d say an extension is on the cards after this” - Chris Hayes on what may come from Coeur D’or’s €120,000 Colm Quinn BMW Mile triumph.
