Highlight of the day

Teed Up was much the best in the feature Connacht Hotel Q.R. Handicap. It continued a run of four consecutive winning favourites on the card, provided another big Ballybrit result for the Mee family and Emmet Mullins, while also going down as a career highlight for Ray Barron.

Ride of the day

Patrick Mullins executed a cracking piece of front-running riding on My Great Mate in the Monami Construction Bumper, stacking up the field on an inexperienced runner who didn’t look the easiest of mounts.

Performance of the day

For all that it possibly didn’t look a deep race, Mystical Power was in a league of his own in the opening Galwaybayhotel.com & TheGalmont.com Novice Hurdle.

Gamble of the day

Confidence behind the J.P. McManus-owned Neveradullmoment in the Easyfix Handicap Hurdle proved well founded. Backed from 8/1 into as short as 7/2 (sent off 4/1), he didn’t miss. The same owner’s Expelliarmus also went from 10/1 to as short as 11/4 in the Eventus Handicap but failed to fire.

In-running carnage of the day

The Snapper traded nearly as short as 1/2 in-running when looking a big player in the straight in the Claytonhotelgalway.ie Handicap, having been sent off at 5/1 on the exchanges. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mystical Power drifted out to just over 14/1 before going on to win the opener (sent off the 6/4 favourite).

Unluckiest runner

Whether he’d have beaten the more experienced Mythology can be debated but Paddy Twomey-trained newcomer Sea The Polaris never got the rub of the green in the Claregalwayhotel.ie Irish EBF Maiden but still ran well to be second.

Quote of the day

“I had no ride in the race all week and I’ve never ridden in it before. Emmet booked me on Friday evening - it was like Christmas getting the call” - Ray Barron on getting the call-up for Teed Up in the day-one feature.
