KILLINURE Lass made it two wins in the space of five days when carrying a 7lb penalty to victory in the Blackwater (QR) Handicap Hurdle and in the process provided Elliot Ohgren with his first Irish winner.

Ohgren (25), from Stockholm but based with Willie Mullins for the last two and a half years, was representing his native Sweden in this two-mile and four furlongs event - the Irish leg of ‘The Gentleman’s League’ Jump Championship for amateur riders from Ireland, England, America, France and Sweden.

The Morozov mare won at Thurles last Saturday and she just proved the stronger on the run-in here to get the better of 7/4 favourite Jump The Shark by half-a-length.

“I was Champion Amateur Jockey in Sweden and also won the Swedish Amateur Derby in 2019 but this is my first Irish winner,” said a delighted Ohgren, who partnered Maze Runner to finish second in the valuable Connacht Hotel (QR) Handicap at last year’s Galway Festival.

“Sometimes it could be the worse thing in the world to turn them out quick after a race but it worked out today. She’ll definitely get a break now,” said Brian McMahon, who trains the 7/2 chance for his mother Anne.

All the threes - family successes

THERE were a trio of father and son victories on the card initiated by Battle It Out for Conor and Charlie O’Dwyer in the Follow Us On Social Media Maiden Hurdle.

The J.P. McManus-owned gelding was sent off the 2/7 favourite but needed to be ridden out on the run-in to beat Knockraha Lass by two and a half lengths.

“I was never as nervous watching a 1/3 chance in my life, not that I’ve had one before!” said winning trainer Conor O’Dwyer.

“It is great to get it over with and he is a smashing big horse who will do nothing only improve. A summer’s break is beckoning for him and he will be a lovely chaser in time.”

Good attitude

Storm Mahler (8/1) showed a good attitude at the business end to take the Way To Paris At Coolagown Stud Handicap Hurdle.

The five-year-old gelding, trained by Eric McNamara and ridden by his son Conor, really knuckled down in the closing stages to beat the gambled-on Mighty Jeremy (11/1 overnight and supported right down to 7/4 favourite) by a neck.

“I’m delighted for Michael Hannon from Clarina, Co Limerick, who has had horses with us for many years. He is a handy horse but is a gamey old devil.

“He probably doesn’t want bottomless but they’re getting through it as it is loose. He’ll run through the summer as he’ll go on nicer ground,” said the local Rathkeale trainer.

Treble

Blizzard Of Oz completed the father and son treble on the card taking the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (Pro/Am) Auction INH Flat Race for the familiar winning combination of Willie and Patrick Mullins.

The Arctic Cosmos gelding, placed on his previous three bumper starts, made no mistake here in the colours of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede with Patrick Mullins oozing confidence as the 5/4 favourite cruised home three lengths clear of Any Road.

“He had been very disappointing but I don’t think we were hard enough on him at home and he’s fitter now. He has the size to jump and loved that (heavy) ground,” said Patrick Mullins.

“I’d imagine he’ll go for a winners’ bumper and Aintree is a possibility, along with Punchestown.”

Cawley makes it two for the week/section

EDDIE Cawley, successful with Misty Hollow at Navan on Monday, saddled his second winner this week as Waittillitellyou (15/2) ultimately ran out a very decisive winner of the featured Conways Yard ‘Egg And Spoon’ Handicap Hurdle.

The lightly raced nine-year-old took command after West Breeze fell two out to score by an easy four lengths in the hands of Phillip Enright and the delighted Batterstown owner/trainer/breeder said afterwards: “He’s had his own little problems so you couldn’t race him on good ground.

“He was ready to run at Christmas but my horses were coughing and then we were getting summer ground so I was delighted to see the rain coming. Hopefully he’ll go on now to Fairyhouse.”

Curragh trainer James Nash and Rachael Blackmore successfully teamed up for the first time as Snapius got on top close home to land the opening Welcome To Student Raceday 2023 Maiden Hurdle.

The Buratino gelding, who won twice on the flat for Joseph O’Brien and was claimed for €20,000 at Fairyhouse last May, was given a patient ride by Blackmore who waited until after the last before galvanising her mount to beat Calico by half-a-length.

“He got a great ride as I told Rachael he wouldn’t like the ground but I hoped he might be quicker than the others, and she obviously took that on board.

“She said he jumped great and he will run through the summer and mix hurdling with the flat,” said Nash, who trains the 100/30 winner for the Fiveohclock Syndicate.

John Kiely added to his memorable Cheltenham win with A Dream To Share when saddling Penny Glory to take the Buy Tickets For The Easter Festival Online Now Mares (Ladies Pro/Am) INH Flat Race. The daughter of Fame And Glory, runner-up twice in point-to-points before a promising debut under rules in a bumper here last spring, only joined the veteran Dungarvan trainer three months ago, and is owned and bred by Albert and Veronica Sherwood

The 9/4 chance led early in the straight and stayed on well inside the final furlong under Maxine O’Sullivan to beat Armed And Fabulous by three-and-three-quarter lengths. Kiely said: “This is a nice mare and she was well prepared before I got her and had plenty of work done. The bit of age helped her on the ground and she got a lovely ride.”
