Newbury Saturday

Rest of card

JUPITER du Gite (Gary Moore/Niall Houlihan) was the lesser fancied of a pair from the yard in the novice hurdle, but the juvenile belied his 66/1 starting price to run out an emphatic 15-length winner of that contest to put himself in the Triumph Hurdle picture.

The half-brother to the stable’s recent Desert Orchid Chase winner Editeur Du Gite was placed in a bumper in France for Jerry Planque but seemed to take connections unaware with this victory.

There was no fluke about it, with the well-regarded Klitschko in second, however, and Jupiter du Gite seems to have inherited much of his half-brother’s talent.

Connections of Jupiter Du Gite went close to a huge-priced double when 25/1 shot Moulins Clermont found only Blenkinsop (Henry Daly/Tom O’Brien) too good in the two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle.

The winner, a solidly supported 10/3 chance, was considered for the Challow, and would have made the frame on this evidence, while he crossed the line with plenty of running left and could well develop into a contender for the Albert Bartlett given he’s highly likely to relish three miles.

The Mandarin Chase isn’t the race of old but produced a gutsy winner in the shape of Grumpy Charley (Chris Honour/Bryan Carver), who clearly likes the track having won the novice handicap on the card 12 months earlier.
